Animal handler contracts deadly disease from faeces

A 32-year-old animal handler of SPCA Animal Hospital, Parel, has been diagnosed with Brucellosis, a disease contracted from animals due to close contact with their excreta.

The victim, Rajesh Tambe, had been chronically ill for the past five months. Suffering from fever and muscular pain, Tambe took antibiotics and fever medicines and continued to work.
Nearly 10 days ago, when his condition worsened and he was unable to walk due to weak limbs, severe joint pains and had trouble breathing, his wife rushed him to the civic-run KEM Hospital.
In spite of doing several tests, the KEM doctors couldn't figure out the reason for his continued illness. Only after he told the doctors that he works as a handler at Bai Sakarbai Dinshaw Petit Animal Hospital that the doctors thought of conducting Brucellosis test on him that generally affects goats, sheep, camels, pigs, elk, deer and dogs. The infection is transmitted to a human when he comes in contact with contaminated animals.
One of the doctors said, "This is a highly contagious infection and in humans it can transmit sexually. A mother can pass it on to her child. Moreover, if anyone comes in contact with the infected person's urine, they also get it. We have asked his wife to take the test."
"Tambe had come to the hospital in a very advanced stage. Though he is stable now, the disease can relapse anytime. We will keep montoring his health," he added.
