Comment: I suspect that the majority of data provided for diseases in this report is a huge undercount of reality. A recent study in Delhi for example indicated that Dengue deaths are under reported by a factor of 42:1. The million death study estimated 92,000 measles deaths(pdf) in children under 5 in India in 2005. Compare that to the 33 deaths counted this year. An estimated 237,000 deaths occurred in children aged under 5 years due to Diarrhoea in India in 2005. Compare that to the all ages total 1,323 deaths reported this year. Malaria deaths could be as high as 200,000 each year (pdf) in India. Compare that to the 535 deaths presented in this report. The report treats these figures as absolute counts and makes no attempt to extrapolate what has been counted to reflect reality. Reporting a 23.27% case fatality rate for H1N1 Influenza is ridiculous and surely requires comment on the extremely poor surveillance and testing regimes in most states. - Ro
