INFECTED BIRD PLANT ON FIRE

<!-- Code added for entertainment - added by anjana --><!-- Code end for entertainment - added by anjana -->Fire crews were called to a blaze at an animal rendering plant which has disposed of poultry infected with bird flu.Firefighters went to John Pointon and Sons in Cheddleton in the early hours of yesterday after a fire broke out in one of its processing lines.
A statement issued by John Pointon and Sons said the blaze had nothing to do with the operation to dispose of birds with avian flu.
A spokesman said: "The fire was contained within one area of the plant, which was separate from the one used recently for poultry carcasses, and it was extinguished by the process itself. Fire crews were on site as a precautionary measure, standing by and liaising with engineers on site."
<!-- DIV added for task NFT00001396 -->The cause of the fire is under investigation, but is not thought to be suspicious. Processing at the plant was suspended as a precaution but resumed yesterday.
The spokesman added."There were no breaches of biosecurity resulting from this incident, therefore there is no risk to public health
"The plant is under 24 hour supervision by staff from Animal Health, a Defra agency, while the carcasses associated with the avian flu outbreak are being processed."
A Defra spokesman said yesterday: "The fire occurred on a different factory line to that which Defra is using and hasn't caused any delay to the rendering and incineration of Defra's culled birds. Operations are continuing as normal.":tiphat:
