THE HSE HAS confirmed and is investigating the second measles case in Ireland this year.

It said that so far ?all known relevant contacts? of the person concerned have been notified and advised of the risk by HSE consultants in public health.

However, the HSE said that as it is not possible to identify all those likely to have been exposed in this case, it wants to highlight the signs and symptoms to watch out for.

It said that the person diagnosed in this case was ?in a number of public settings? in Dublin and Kerry in the week leading up to and including the May bank holiday weekend (25 April to 2 May)...

HSE alert over measles outbreak in West Limerick and Kerry

TEN cases of measles have been reported in the West Limerick and Kerry area over the past two weeks. This compares with a total of six cases reported for the entire country last year.

So far, only half of the ten cases have been confimed through laboratory tests while the results on the remaining five are pending.

Dr Rose Fitzgerald, a specialist in Public Health Medicine has, however, stressed that ?most people will have nothing to worry about as the vast majority of the population have either had measles infection or been fully vaccinated.?

?We are being very cautious in this instance because measles is potentially a serious condition,? she said, before adding: ?We are currently very close to eliminating measles here in Ireland.?...

The HSE is investigating an ongoing measles outbreak among young people across the State.

Outbreak control teams have been convened in HSE East, South and Midwest.

Nineteen measles cases linked to the outbreak have been identified to date, of which 13 are confirmed and six are probable.

All cases have been identified in the under 30 age group, with most cases occurring in the 15-19 year age group.

The HSE says it believes the source of infection most likely came from another European country where measles outbreaks are occurring....

Parents have been urged to ensure their children?s vaccinations are up to date as a measles outbreak grows.

Forty suspected cases of measles have been reported to the HSE?s Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC), of which 21 have been confirmed.

The outbreak centres on the south-west but some cases have been reported in Dublin, the mid-west and north-east.

Although public health doctors have traced the origin and spread of the disease, the outbreak has not been contained. The first case was reported in early May. Most cases have occurred in those not vaccinated...

PRECAUTIONS have been called for by public health doctors after fifteen cases of measles have been confirmed in Kerry.

The outbreak has been linked to a case in April when an infectious person travelled on a flight from Dublin to the county.

Kerry University Hospital- which has not treated a patient with measles in several years, has appealed to people not to bring children to the hospital as visitors.

If someone has suspected measles they should also not attend their GP surgery but instead ask for a home visit.

The hospital?s emergency consultant Martin Boyd said measles are very contagious.

No serious complications in the fifteen cases recorded so far in Kerry have emerged.

Earlier this month, the HSE public health departments and the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) said they were investigating an ongoing measles outbreak in different parts of Ireland.

The number of measles cases in Ireland has increased six fold already this year, with one person with the disease visiting Enniscrone in late May, according to the HSE.

This follows an outbreak of 22 cases in Kerry last week. The source of the infection came from a person travelling on a flight from Croatia in mid May, says the HSE.

The cases increased to 22 in Kerry, where a number of pupils had to miss school due to the outbreak.

Dr. Fiona Ryan, Consultant in Public Health said the HSE was looking to raise public awareness around the signs and symptoms of the condition and ensure that anyone with concerns addresses them immediately in order to receive a rapid diagnosis...

THE HSE SAYS that patients at the centre of a measles outbreak have been in the Kerry area and Dublin Airport in the last month.

The HSE Public Health Departments and the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) continue to investigate an outbreak of the illness in Kerry, which was first flagged in early May.

Outbreak control teams have been convened in HSE East, Northeast, South, Southeast and Midwest regions. As of this week, 33 cases have been confirmed nationally.

Most of those affected are under ten and 70% haven?t had their MMR vaccination...

The case is unrelated to the recently reported outbreak, which occurred mostly in Kerry, and resulted in 34 confirmed measles cases between April-mid July.

The latest person with measles travelled to Dublin by air on July 18.

At the time of travel the person was infectious- but did not know it, said the HSE.

The person then travelled from Dublin to Galway by private transport. The case was diagnosed upon arrival in Galway and laboratory testing has confirmed measles infection.

The Health Protection Surveillance Centre contacted the airline involved and requested that all fellow passengers on the flight be notified of their possible exposure to measles....

Health officials have issued a warning about an outbreak of adult measles in Co Cork.

The HSE is also attempting to trace people who may have come into contact with those infected in an attempt to prevent the disease from spreading...

The infected person was in public places in Mitchelstown and Clonmel, Co Tipperary while infectious and there is a possibility that members of the public may have been exposed to the virus, the HSE said.

The HSE said the person was in Supervalu on New Square in Mitchelstown on July 25th and 27th. They were also at the Living Health Clinic on Fermoy Road in Mitchelstown on July 28th while infectious.

The person was also in Clonmel over the same period between July 23rd and 24th and again between July 30th and August 3rd when they were infectious with the disease...
