Italy - Outbreak of avian influenza in Oppeano (Verona)

The first seasonal case of avian flu in the Verona area has been confirmed, with the virus affecting a turkey farm in Oppeano. This was announced by Confagricoltura. Last week, an infection was recorded in a broiler chicken plant in Povoletto, in the province of Udine.

In the previous season, Veneto had recorded 25 cases out of 56 in Italy, which had led to the slaughter of millions of animals and the establishment of Further Restriction Zones (Zur) in the territories concerned.

"This contagion in our territory, which arrived two months earlier than last season, makes us apprehensive – explains Diego Zoccante, president of the poultry farmers of Confagricoltura Verona -. Not so much because of the flu itself, now endemic, which manifests itself every autumn with bird migrations, but because any changes in the epidemiological situation could bring restrictions and monitoring on farms within a radius of ten kilometers from the affected farm".

The Management Arrangement of 15 October 2025 establishing a Further Restriction Zone (ZUR) for highly pathogenic avian influenza is accompanied by the request to ensure its maximum dissemination.

As of 29 September 2025, 4 outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza of the H5N1 subtype have been confirmed, 3 of which in turkey farms located in an area with a high poultry density in the Province of Verona. To these were added, in the first days of October, the outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza confirmed in Oppeano (VR) and Isola della Scala (VR) respectively October 2025.
Since areas with high poultry density are one of the main risk factors for the spread of avian influenza between farms, the authorities in charge have agreed to establish a Further Restriction Zone including the municipalities referred to in the map and list in Annex 1 which is an integral and substantial part of the measure.
