Changdi (Lolab), Apr 21: Three young boys of a poor family in this remote village, about 18 kms from Kupwara, have been rendered disabled due to a mysterious disease which doctors are finding difficult to diagnose.

Zahoor Ahmad Khan, 16, his brother Showkat Ahmad Khan, 14, and Nazakat Hussain Khan,12, have left their studies and they are unable to move.

?They are not able to eat. They have been bed-ridden for past 12 months,? said their family members.

The affected boys are unable to speak, unable to stand on their feet, and bend their arms. Their nervous system, liver, eyes and brain have got affected,? family members said.

SRINAGAR: For Abdul Khaliq Khan, a resident of Lolab Kupwara, it was time for his children to look after him. But the destiny had stored something else for him. Among his five children; the legs of three brothers are completely paralysed.
But what haunts Khaliq Khan is the fear that his other two children-brother and sister, might also suffer from this mystery diseases.
Khaliq, who is in early 70s, is worried about the treatment of his children, as he went from pillar to post to get his children treated but of no avail.
All the three paralysed brothers are in the age group of 20-25 and are incapable to walk. Besides legs, this mystery disease has also started affecting other parts of the body. So far the doctors have failed to diagnose the disease. ?The doctors failed to treat their disease despite I having spent thousands of rupees. Since 2008, I have been short of money due to which I was not able to continue their treatment in or outside the Valley,? he said.
According to Khan, their disease aggravates with their age. ?The more they grow, the more pain intensifies?.
Khan said that this disease is first of its kind in the Valley and the doctors have failed to find the cause behind it. ?One doctor said it is Polio and other doctor calls it muscular dystrophy. But nobody has been able to treat them. My children are confined inside a room. We serve them meals there and they sleep in one room,? the dejected Khaliq said.
