Japan: 445 hospitalized last week, 34 in ICU

The H1N1 flu is continuing to spread in Japan with 445 people hospitalized in the week from Oct 14 to 20, the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry said Wednesday in a preliminary report. Among those hospitalized, 394, or almost 90 percent, were aged 19 or younger and 162 faced the risk of complications due to underlying conditions, according to the report.

It also said 34 patients had developed acute encephalopathy or were on mechanical ventilators. In the previous week, 506 people were hospitalized, according to the ministry
