Japan grants half-million birdflu antiviral Tamiflu pills to Thailand
BANGKOK, Dec 25 (TNA) ? Thailand's public health ministry has received 500,000 Tamiflu pills, valued at Bt 42 million from Japan for domestic stockpiling in case of an outbreak of bird flu.
Public Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai said Thailand has seen no birdflu patient for more than three years.
He said Thailand has sufficient medication in its stockpile if there is a pandemic.
Ambassador Kyoji Komachi of Japan represented his government in giving 585,200 Tamiflu tablets to Thailand's public health minister, as part of the regional cooperation between Japan and ASEAN to prevent the flu outbreak in the region.
Public Health Ministry permanent secretary Dr. Prat Boonyavongvirot said that the medication will be used for health officials, who are more at-risk of flu infection from patients.
Bird flu human cases were detected in 14 countries with most cases being found in Indonesia.
Dr. Prat said the ministry had closely monitored the situation and held a drill to practice responding to an actual outbreak at the provincial level.
Thailand has stockpiled more than four million Tamiflu pills, enough for health officials and flu patients.
The large lot of Tamiflu medications from Japan was handed over to Thailand under a 2006 agreement and the pills are validated for three years. (TNA)
