Mandera/Wajir ? An outbreak of dengue fever and a suspected outbreak of kala-azar in northern Kenya are drawing attention to the need for improved health services in some of the country's most remote communities.

Health officials report the dengue fever outbreak is taking place in Mandera District, along the Ethiopian and Somali borders. Local health workers say there have been some 300 cases since the outbreak began in January. Three suspected dengue deaths have been recorded, and there are fears that more cases have gone unreported...

Mombasa, Kenya: Two patients have been diagnosed with symptoms of the deadly dengue fever.

Coast Provincial Director of Medical Services Dr Khadija Shikely confirmed that tests done by the Kenya Medical Research Institute ( KEMRI) in Kilifi County returned positive results for the deadly fever on two samples taken from two patients at the Aga Khan Hospital in Mombasa two weeks ago...

AS the Health ministry denies an outbreak of dengue fever in Mombasa, experts say transmission will increase in the rainy season.

Coast provincial director of public health Dr Anisa Omar yesterday said experts from the department of disease control visited the areas where dengue patients are.

"They conducted a preliminary study and revealed that the population of the mosquito transmitting the fever was low,? said Omar. She said the disease prevalence is likely to rise during the rainy season when the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits the fever, breeds.

Omar faulted private hospitals for not providing the ministry with information on dengue patients. ?We have no problem with government hospitals. What I can tell private hospitals is that once such symptoms are detected, let them relay that information to our district surveillance officers scattered in the region,? she said.

Omar was speaking to the press in Mombasa. Two people, one in Ganjoni and another in Tudor, were diagnosed with the malaria-like disease at Aga Khan Hospital two weeks ago...

Alarm raised on Dengue Fever cases at the Coast

KENYA: At least 58 cases of Dengue Fever have been confirmed in Mombasa County in two months, according to medical research experts.

The experts disclosed in Mombasa yesterday that 34 samples are still undergoing testing. Within this period, 148 samples from a similar number of suspected cases were taken for tests at the Kenya Medical Research Institute ( Kemri) in Nairobi and 58 turned out to be positive with the virus causing dengue fever.

MORE than 140 cases of the Dengue fever have been reported in Mombasa county, according to a report by Kenya Medical Research Institute.

Speaking during a breakfast meeting yesterday, Kemfri indicated 58 out of 143 cases reported tested positive. Abdinoor Mohamed, a Kemfri researcher, said the cases are evenly distributed across the county. He said they are working on a way to eradicate it...

Red Cross officials in charge of the programme, Gregory Okal, said they cleared the bushes and sprayed insecticide in the houses in the estate.

Speaking to the Star during the activity, Okal said Mombasa has 115 confirmed cases of Dengue fever and 356 results awaited from a comprehensive laboratory test in Nairobi.
