Foot-and-mouth kills over 2,000 cattle in southern Laos

VIENTIANE, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- Over 2,000 cattle died of food- and-mouth disease (FMD) in Laos'southern Saravan and Champassak provinces last month according to official figures, the state-run Vientiane Times reported on Thursday.
"We are in contact with the central Livestock and Fisheries Department for equipment and vaccine assistance," the paper quoted Bounlieng viengmany, Deputy Head of the provincial Livestock and Fisheries Section, as saying.
The provincial authorities urged village veterinarians to provide more vaccinations and treatment for sick animals, as well as advising farmers to burn or bury animals killed by the disease instead of eating them and avoid transiting animals through outbreak areas.
The newspaper reported that in Saravan province the disease killed over 500 calves and a further 500 cattle and buffaloes have been treated between Jan. 17 and 31. Meanwhile over 1,600 animals have died in Champassak province...
