MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ? An outbreak of Listeria linked to a Wisconsin cheese maker is being blamed for the death of one person in Minnesota.

According to the Minnesota Department of Health, the multi-state outbreak is being linked to Les Fr?res Cheese, made by Crave Brothers Farmstead Classics Cheese In Waterloo, Wis.

Two older adults in Minnesota got sick in early June after eating the cheese, and one later died...

Health officials investigate Listeria outbreak linked to cheese

Pregnant women, newborns and adults with weakened immune systems most at risk


The Minnesota Departments of Health and Agriculture are working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on a multi-state outbreak investigation of listeriosis linked to eating Les Fr?res cheese made by Crave Brothers Farmstead Classics Cheese, a Wisconsin producer. The investigation is ongoing but there are related cases in at least three other states.

Two people in Minnesota so far have become ill. Both were older adults. They became ill in early June. Both were hospitalized and one died.

The Department of Agriculture is testing samples of the cheese and early results indicate presence of Listeria; confirmation is pending.

Health officials are warning consumers who may have purchased these cheeses:

Les Fr?res, Petit Fr?re, Petit Fr?re with Truffles and still have it in their refrigerators to not eat it until more information becomes available from the investigation.

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture has advised grocery stores and distributors to pull and not sell the products until further information is available.

Listeriosis is a serious infection caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. The disease affects primarily older adults, pregnant women, newborns, and persons with weakened immune systems.

Approximately 4 to 10 cases of listeriosis are reported in Minnesota each year. Symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness; however, infections during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage or stillbirth, premature delivery, or infection of the newborn. Symptoms often begin 3 weeks after infection, but it could take anywhere from 3 to 70 days.

Anyone who believes they may have become ill with listeriosis should contact their health care provider.

Crave Brothers Farmstead Cheese Recalls Les Fr?res Cheese Products

July 3, 2013 ? WATERLOO, WI - Crave Brothers Farmstead Cheese Company is issuing a voluntary recall for three specialty cheese products while regulatory agencies continue a multi-state investigation of Listeria monocytogenes...

The products recalled are:
Les Fr?res (LF225 2/2.5#) with a make date of 7-1-13 or prior, packaged in white plastic with a green and gold label.
Petit Fr?re (PF88 8/8 oz) with a make date of 7-1-13 or prior, packaged in small round wooden boxes.
Petit Fr?re with Truffles (PF88T 8/8 oz) with a make date of 7-1-13 or prior, packaged in small round wooden boxes.

These products were distributed nationwide through retail and foodservice outlets as well as by mail orders.

Crave Brothers was informed by regulatory agencies of an ongoing investigation related to potential health risks associated with Listeria monocytogenes. The company immediately ceased the production and distribution of the products.

Illnesses prompt wide Whole Foods cheese recall

NEW YORK (AP) ? Whole Foods Market Inc. is recalling Crave Brothers Les Freres cheese in response to an outbreak of a bacterial infection that has sickened people in several states and killed at least one person.

Whole Foods says the cheese may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. It was sold in 30 states and Washington DC under names including Les Freres and Crave Brothers Les Freres. The cheese was cut and packaged in clear plastic wrap and sold with Whole Foods Market scale labels. The company is posting signs in its stores to inform customers about the recall.

Officials said cases have been identified in at least three states. Public health officials in Illinois said Wednesday that one resident became sick after eating contaminated cheese in May. Minnesota officials said Thursday that one elderly person in the state died and another was hospitalized after illnesses linked to the cheese. Both of those illnesses happened in June.

August 22, 2013 - A total of six persons infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes have been reported from five states.

The number of ill persons identified in each state is as follows: Illinois (1), Indiana (1), Minnesota (2), Ohio (1), and Texas (1).
All six ill persons were hospitalized. One death was reported in Minnesota. In addition, one illness in a pregnant woman resulted in a miscarriage.
Since the last update, one ill person has been reported from Texas...

The recalled cheeses were distributed nationwide through retail and foodservice outlets as well as by mail orders.
