The first victim of bird flu was a swan Second ELTA news 2/18/2018 2:37 PM
The State Food and Veterinary Office (SFVS) reports that the National Institute for Food and Veterinary Risk Assessment has confirmed the presence of a highly pathogenic avian influenza virus of subtype H5N1.

A dead swan was found last week on the bank of the Nemunas in Kaunas. This is the first case in Lithuania this year when bird flu has been detected in the wild, the SFVS report said.

"An indifferent citizen informed the services about the observed swan on the bank of the Nemunas. In this area - near the MK Čiurlionis bridge - there are a lot of water birds, and the residents like to feed them. Although the likelihood that the virus may have been transmitted to humans or poultry through contact with carcasses is almost zero, the risk of the virus being transmitted to migratory birds from poultry farms is very high. Therefore, in the laboratory we carefully examine all the found dead birds and urge all poultry farmers to strengthen the monitoring and safety of the farms, ”warns Vilija Grigaliūnienė, Adviser to the SFVS Emergency Department...
