Area dogs coming down with mysterious cough

It's a mysterious cough that some local veterinarians have never seen. And since November, more and more dogs have been catching it.

In fact, in the last few months, Abadie Veterinary Hospital in Harahan has seen 90 cases.
"Shortly after Thanksgiving, we saw a large number of dogs starting to come in coughing. Some of them had been boarding. Some of them hadn't been here in three to six months," said veterinarian Dr. Scott Abadie.

"I was talking to a vet at one of the Saints games from Baton Rouge and he said he had seen a lot of dogs that were coughing. So I don't know if this is across the area or if it's just been limited to this little part of Harahan, River Ridge," he said.
It is apparently not related to either of the two dog flu strains that are going around, especially in the north. It is also not kennel cough. In fact, the labs are testing the mouth swabs for all the usual infections and so far they can't isolate it. Dogs are not running fever or losing their appetite or will to play. And so far antibiotics don't make a difference, so it could be a virus. Dr. Abadie is just treating the cough for now.

It's hitting dogs of all ages, but so far none of their owners report it spreading to family members.
