MALE, February 10 (HNS) ? An outbreak of dengue fever, which has spread across the Maldives, left a five-year-old dead on Wednesday.

MALE, February 14 (HNS) ? The Director General of Center for Community Health and Disease Control, Dr. Mohamed Jamsheed said that a five- year-old boy died today due to Degue fever.

The boy from Noonu Manadhoo died in Male after he was transferred from Raa Ungoofaaru Hospital.

Children?s Doctor of the Indira Gandhi Medical Hospital (IGMH), Dr. Abdulla Niyaaf said that the boy died before he was brought to the hospital and that he was suffering from dengue hemorrhagic fever.

?Two children have died due to dengue fever this year, and one adult. This is a serious issue,? Dr Niyaaf said.

He said that there are eight children and three adults with dengue being treated in IGMH. He noted that the conditions of the three adults are serious...

Male in particular has seen a large spike in the number of dengue cases, with two confirmed deaths this year, in the aftermath of recent rains. The Director General said that the number of cases during just these first two months of the year is approximately over 300, a significant number when contrasted against the 774 cases reported throughout the whole of 2009 and 917 cases listed in 2010.

However, the Director General did mention that the epidemic had reached its peak, and it was likely to gradually abate as the year wore on. Nevertheless, the CCHDC faces an uphill battle trying to eradicate the disease, with Dr. Jamsheed stating on a previous occasion that 773 breeding sites were identified in just a single day of work.

MALE, June 29 (HNS) – The death toll from dengue fever in the Maldives has reached four in 48 hours with the latest death recorded this morning.

Four-year-old Ahmed Lifshan of Reef View/Haa Alif atoll Muraidhoo is believed to have died while being transferred to Haa Dhaal Atoll Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital from the hospital in Haa Alif atoll Dhidhoo.

An official from Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital said Lifshan was dead when brought to the hospital where the cause of the death was identified as dengue haemorrhagic fever.

Alhan Ahmed Aslam of Dhilbahaaruge/Baa atoll Thulhaadhoo, aged two and a half years, also died at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) around 3am today after he was transferred from ADK Hospital for further treatment.

“There were more patients in ADK than the hospital could cater for with its two blood transfusion machines. We were asked to transfer him to IGMH’s ICU, which was full. He died while being treated at the emergency treatment room,” a relative said.

A nine-month-old baby and a six-year-old girl, who was transferred to Male from Meemu Atoll Mulee Regional Hospital, died yesterday at IGMH hospital.

The incidence of dengue is growing in capital Male and some islands of the country with hospitals getting crowded with patients admitted for treatment and five deaths recorded so far this year.

MALE, July 4 (HNS) ? The four-year old boy who was being treated for dengue fever at the Intensive Critical Care Unit (ICCU) in Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) died last night.

This is the seventh child to die of the disease this year and the fifth to die since the rapid spread of the disease since last week.

An official from the dengue control task-force revealed that all arrangements had been made to take the child to Sri Lanka when he died.

41-year-old man dies of dengue

MALE, July 7 (HNS) ? A 41-year-old man sick with dengue died early this morning on arrival in Male from Addu, making this the first adult death from the disease this year.

The dengue control task-force in Addu confirmed that Ali Ahmed, 41, of Seenu Hithadhoo Dhurumeege was hospitalized on June 28 at the Hithadhoo Hospital and being treated at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for the past week.

The dengue death toll so far this year has reached eight including seven children. Ali Ahmed is the sixth dengue patient to die in the latest outbreak.

Expatriate worker dies of dengue in Gaaf Dhaal atoll

MALE, July 20 (HNS) ? An expatriate worker yesterday died of dengue haemorrhagic fever while being treated at Gaaf Dhaal Thinadhoo hospital.

The hospital revealed that the 37-year old Indian man was brought from Gaaf Dhaal Konottaa, an island being developed as a tourist resort, yesterday morning.

?He died of dengue shock syndrome less than three hours into treatment,? said Aminath Abdul Hakeem, who is in charge of running the hospital.

She further revealed that five more workers brought from the island tested positive for dengue and were being treated at the hospital.

A total of 1,900 cases of dengue has been recorded this year with nine deaths, the second highest death toll for the disease in recent history compared to 10 in 2006 when 2,788 cases were recorded.

Latest dengue fatality makes 2011 worst year on record

A 22 year-old man has died in Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) of dengue fever, reports Haveeru, taking the death toll to 11 and making 2011 the worst recorded year for fatalities due to the virus.
Ten people died in 2006 from the mosquito-borne virus.

The latest victim, Ahmed Shinah from the island of Vaadhoo in Gaaf Dhaal Atoll, was treated for dengue fever at regional hospitals in Villingili and Thinadhoo, Haveeru reported.

Dengue spreading in Gaaf Alif Villingili

MALE, July 27 (HNS) ? Gaaf Alif Villingili Council yesterday revealed that dengue fever has been spreading rapidly in the island since July 22, with 17 cases including one death recorded so far.

Saud Hussain, President of the council said that four confirmed cases and eight suspected cases of dengue were being treated at the Villingili Hospital.
