Many Malaysians Yet To Take H1N1 Vaccine - Liow Tiong Lai
CYBERJAYA, May 24 (Bernama) -- The response to the H1N1 vaccine among Malaysians is still low with many of them not getting the vaccination despite it can be obtained free at government hospitals and clinics nationwide, Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said Monday.
He said this should not happen, especially among those in the high risk category, since H1N1 was still an epidemic.
So far, he said, only 123,000 Malaysians had been given the vaccine.
"The vaccine has no serious effects, except a slight pain in the arm, mild fever and dizziness among some people," he told a press conference here today.
Earlier, Liow bestowed the title of life honorary president of the Malaysian Lim Association on Lim Kok Wing Creative and Technology University president Tan Sri Dr Lim Kok Wing here.
On the current H1N1 situation, Liow said 14,633 H1N1 cases, including 86 deaths, had been reported in the country so far.
"There are 590 cases of influenza-like illness under treatment with 61 of them confirmed as H1N1 positive.
"Eight of the patients are in the Intensive care Unit and all of them are high risk cases," he added.
Liow advised those having symptoms of the disease to seek immediate treatment .
On dengue situation, he said the disease had claimed 60 lives between January and May 22 this year.
He said a total of 18,850 dengue cases, with 60 deaths, were reported during the period, compared with 20,934 cases and 53 deaths in the corresponding period last year.
