Mathis man, 27, dies from swine flu

CORPUS CHRISTI ? A 27-year-old Mathis man died from complications related to the swine flu, health officials said Monday
The victim, whose name was not available, had been hospitalized at Christus Spohn Hospital Memorial since Sept. 17.
He came to the hospital in serious condition and was on a ventilator until he died Saturday, said Dr. James Mobley, San Patricio County health department medical director.
He suffered from sleep apnea, considered an underlying condition that can lead to complications, Mobley said.
The death marks the fourth connected to H1N1 in San Patricio County and its second death in a week. An Aransas Pass man died Tuesday of complications related to the virus. A 48-year-old Portland man and a 54-year-old Gregory man died in November.
Nueces County has had 10 swine-flu related deaths. The most recent was Saturday, when a woman between 60 and 70 years old died at a hospital. Jim Wells County has reported one.
At least anecdotally, the victims who are dying start out deathly sick and decline, Mobley said. Sometimes there also are underlying conditions that make victims high risk such as asthma or obesity. But those who recover usually are not as sick at the start, Mobley said.
?It seems like lightning striking,? Mobley said. ?I don?t see a pattern here. I don?t see why this person with sleep apnea has (a mortal case) and my others with sleep apnea don?t.?
San Patricio County is working to control the virus? spread by immunizing school-aged children, Mobley said. The health department has 1,400 doses on hand.
Sinton ISD students will have the option to get the vaccine Tuesday. And Odem ISD students can get vaccinated Thursday, Mobley said.
Once schools close for the holidays Friday, the health department will schedule clinics to offer the vaccine to the general public, Mobley said.
