Whooping Cough Cases Found in Emmet County

Whooping cough is serious, miserable and preventable. Doctors diagnosed two siblings in Emmet County with whooping cough this week. Now the Health Department of Northwest Michigan wants to remind everyone to get vaccinated.

The department says whooping cough can start off like a simple cold. But within a week or two, they say that mild cough can turn into painful coughing fits. It's also highly contagious. That's why they say immunizations are so important.

"It's not just a disease of the past, it's a disease that's hear today also and so that's why getting immunizations on a regular basis is so important for children, especially for infants," Pat Fralick, Health Dept. of Northwest Michigan nurse, said.

Family members of young babies are also encouraged to get vaccinated. Besides getting the vaccine at your doctors office, local health departments have the vaccine.

It can manifest itself as a simple cough that won't go away.

Or - as it happened to one Washtenaw County man this year - the whooping cough can lead to coughing so hard it makes a person pass out. Officials say cases of the respiratory illness have reached record levels this season - and they're not sure why.

In 2009, there were at least 81 confirmed cases of whooping cough, otherwise known at pertussis, the highest number since electronic records started in 1992. The second highest number of cases was in 2003, when there were 36 cases of whooping cough.

So far this year, 15 confirmed cases of whooping cough have been recorded. A typical year sees about 20 total cases, said county epidemiologist Laura Bauman.

Last summer, county officials said cases appeared to be up from usual levels. It is not clear why there have been a surge in cases, Bauman said...

Several local school employees got vaccinated at the Western U.P. Health Department

HOUGHTON COUNTY -- There have been eight confirmed cases of whooping cough in Houghton County Schools over the last four weeks and officials say the disease's long incubation period means that number could quickly rise.

Several local school employees got vaccinated at the Western U.P. Health Department Monday.

Officials say there are plenty of vaccines available from most medical providers.

The first confirmed case was with a Hancock Middle School student on March 8.

Since then three more students and a teacher in the district have also been infected...

GENESEE CO. -- The following is a message from teh Genesee Co. Health Department:

The outbreak of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, in Genesee County continues to escalate. Nearly every community in Genesee County has been affected by this outbreak. Spread of this disease has been seen in group settings including schools. The majority of the cases have been among those 5 to 24 years of age. This increase is also occurring state-wide and one infant in Michigan has died from pertussis this year. Genesee County is being affected especially hard by this outbreak with a 1500% increase in the disease in 2010 compared to this time last year. The Genesee County Health Department (GCHD) is informing the community of this ongoing outbreak and reminding everyone to be aware of signs and symptoms of pertussis. There are likely more cases occurring because pertussis is often an unrecognized and undiagnosed prolonged cough illness...

GENESEE COUNTY, Michigan — Approaching his 70th birthday, John Bach never thought he was a candidate for whooping cough. Does anyone get whooping cough anymore, really?

The answer is yes.

In fact, an outbreak of pertussis — the medical name for what is commonly called whooping cough — in Genesee County has infected 32 people this year.

It may not sound like much, but that’s a 1,500 percent increase over last year, when only two cases were recorded, according to the Genesee County Health Department.

“I would tell everyone that if you are coughing hard, it may seem just like a cold. Go see a doctor. You are very contagious,” Bach said...

Cluster of cases reported in Saline

Washtenaw County residents continue to contract whooping cough in record numbers, said Laura Bauman, an epidemiologist with the Washtenaw County Department of Public Health.

So far this year, the county has had 37 confirmed cases, far surpassing the 20 cases reported in a typical year. Last year, the county had 81 cases of of whooping cough, the highest number reported since the county started keeping electronic records in 1992.

GENESEE COUNTY, Michigan ? The number of cases of whooping cough ? medically called pertussis ? continues to rise in Genesee County, with 10 new cases reported in the first 10 days of June, according to the Genesee County Health Department.

So far in 2010, Genesee County has seen 45 cases of pertussis, a 1500 percent increase in the disease over last year, said Fatema Mamou, an epidemiologist at the health department.

Through the same time period last year, the county had only recorded three such cases, Mamou said...

900 Grandparents University participants possibly exposed to whooping cough

About 900 children and their grandparents might have been exposed to pertussis, or whooping cough, at Grandparents University at MSU.

A child who attended the event, held between June 29 and July 1 was infectious, although not yet diagnosed with pertussis, might have infected others.

The Michigan Department of Community Health, or MDCH, has identified 20 individuals in the Ingham County area who are at high risk for contracting pertussis.

Marcus Cheatham, the Assistant Deputy Health Officer for the Ingham County Health Department said outbreaks of pertussis are becoming common and can happen anywhere.

?Pertussis is increasing nationally and in Michigan,? Cheatham said. ?Last year (in Ingham County) we had 294 cases, and in 2010 we?ve had 426. It does go in cycles. It?s normal for it to have a couple years that are really high and some that are lower.?

The department is in the process of contacting the 20 individuals who were identified as being high risk through the MDCH, Cheatham said.

Those who have had immunizations are not at risk, but two individuals whose vaccinations are not up to date have been located and advised to contact their doctors. Cheatham said only two such people have been identified thus far, and the department will work throughout the weekend until all 20 are contacted.

Those infected with pertussis experience a strong, hacking cough that can last for several weeks. It can be fatal in infants, who can contract the disease from immunized adults and children.

?People remember it for the rest of their lives as being a bad experience,? Cheatham said.

Mich. urges vaccinations as whooping cough rises

Health officials throughout Michigan are warning adults that a cough that seems like a minor aggravation to them could prove deadly to infants and children.

Adults who work with children are being urged to get a booster vaccine for whooping cough to prevent the disease from spreading. The virus is on track to at least double the number of cases that had been seen in most recent years, the Times Herald of Port Huron reported Saturday.

The Michigan Department of Community Health says 595 cases have been reported statewide since January, and 902 cases were reported last year. That compares with about 330 cases a year on average between 2003 and 2008. ..

Washtenaw County, MICH. -- Whooping cough has become a Washtenaw County epidemic.

County officials said the contagious and potentially deadly illness is at a record high, with 94 cases reported in county residents this year as of Sept. 1.

The total number of cases for 2009 was 81, which had been the highest number seen in years.

The last record year was 2003, when 36 cases of pertussis were reported in Washtenaw County.

Cases are also up statewide. In February, a 3-month-old baby from St. Clair died after being misdiagnosed as having a cold...

Whooping cough cases have jumped this year in Jackson County and statewide.

A recent diagnosis of whooping cough ? also known as pertussis ? involving a student at Jackson?s Cascades Elementary School is one of 15 confirmed cases in the county this year in addition to four ?probable? cases, said Mary Ricciardello, director of personal and preventative health services for the Jackson County Health Department. That?s up from an average of 4.25 annually in the previous four years, she said.

Statewide, 770 cases are reported this year, Ricciardello said, compared to 543 for all of 2009...

ALPENA AND MONTMORENCY COUNTIES -- Health officials are warning people in Alpena and Montmorency Counties of a whooping cough outbreak.

The health department says the highly contagious bacterial disease also know as pertussis has been on the rise across the state and the nation.

There are now three confirmed cases in this region and more are expected as the investigation continues...
