04.11.2009 | 18.02
The confirmation of two new deaths from influenza A H1N1 in Argentina and increased respiratory consultations in Uruguay, led the Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) to conduct a survey through sentinel sites across the country. It was found that no evidence of a resurgence of the disease.
Fears over a possible second wave of influenza A H1N1, a disease that remained preoccupied the world during the first half of the year, seem to fade, according to the MSP. Anyway, given that it is not possible to determine exactly how the disease is controlled, as they are isolated cases.
The concern arose after learning of the death of a woman of 61 years and a 22 in Argentina and was an increase in consultations for respiratory and allergic tables in Uruguay. These were awarded only to sudden temperature changes, which were thought to health authorities in both Uruguay and Argentina, the region could be facing a resurgence.
In mid August, the World Health Organization had warned of an imminent outbreak countries, especially the northern hemisphere countries, with an impact that could be worse as there were more affected.
According to the latest report issued by the agency, 2185 people died of influenza A H1N1 and there are over 209,000 are infected worldwide.
In the neighboring country, with preliminary figures from the Ministry of Health indicate that 595 people were killed since May because of this disease.
The director of epidemiology in the province of Buenos Aires, Mario Massana Wilson, told the AFP news agency that this is not a rebound. As stated, for that to happen it must at least triple the cases (of infection) occurred in the last month.
In Uruguay, the Ministry of Public Health conducted a survey through the different sentinel sites, the medical centers and hospital infections committee for the purpose of assessing the situation.
According to confirmed the Secretary of State, there is as yet no factor that proves the existence of some kind of resurgence of influenza A H1N1.
The Director General of Health, Jorge Basso, told El Espectador that are not given the weather conditions for the virus found "most" potential for transmission.
"We can assure that we have in health institutions, no information, no epidemiological survey of the area that we are taking this month flu cases, particularly influenza A H1N1. It is entirely linked to climatic conditions beyond the temperature changes we are enduring, not the conditions for airborne tables, including the respiratory, find their potential for transmission. Therefore, it is found that's definitely what he has to do with hospital discharges, consultations.
Meanwhile, the MOH is evaluating the performance of the vaccine against influenza A H1N1, which since October has been implemented in some northern hemisphere countries, especially in the U.S. as a way of learning when Uruguay have to apply doses.
In this regard, the director general of Health said that Uruguay will apply two vaccines in the season starting in March. One will be aimed at preventing the influenza A H1N1, while the second will be the same one applied to seasonal flu.
Basso also indicated that Uruguay will choose the best vaccine in December and that it will reach the country a month before starting the campaign.
"Between March and April we are vaccinating, because bids are made through PAHO, which closed the tender for 200 million vaccines for all Latin America. It is doing precisely the classification of individual vaccines, they are several labs that are producing and that will allow in this December we make the choice that best conforms to reality and in March have the vaccine, "said the hierarch.
Moreover, Basso said that within a few days it will ban the sale of some nonprescription drugs, including Tamiflu and Oseltamivir, recommended for treating influenza A H1N1.
The head explained that the decision was made as a way to promote "rational drug use and prevent drug resistance is generated by its inappropriate use.
"We are in the final part of the decree that will establish the modifications to the drug formulary. Annually, in this time of year some drugs are incorporated into some active ingredients, which are compulsory to all providers, both private and public. In this framework, we will adjust the ordinance to incorporate Oseltamivir, like any other infection that requires medication for a medical indication because, somehow, we must ensure that their use is appropriate. It is a concern worldwide that can generate drug resistance. It looks like we are in the best conditions, either of the pandemic situation, to regularize the training framework, "said Basso.
Meanwhile, Public Health Minister Maria Julia Mu?oz, explained that the measure is taken so that people who present symptoms go to the doctor and do not treat yourself.
