New Town Public School started the new year with the unsettling news that a student tested positive for active tuberculosis, setting off an emergency message to parents that all students in grades six through 12 should be skin tested on Friday.
Children who attend daycare in the high school also should be tested as well as staff, the message said.
Superintendent Marc Bluestone said parents were alerted by automated phone messaging Wednesday and through the school?s website that their children need a permission slip to be tested. The free test will be conducted by clinic and public health workers, who will return Monday to look for a positive or negative reaction.
Bluestone emphasized it?s important for anyone who receives the skin test Friday to be at the school Monday for the follow-up.
