High Plains student dies from possible meningitis

POLK ? A High Plains Community Schools student died from an apparent case of bacterial meningitis.
Social media posts show parents and staff are on edge after learning a sophomore's death on Thursday may have been caused by the contagious disease.
The Merrick County Attorney's Office has requested that the student's name not be published.
His younger brother attends first grade in the school district, so elementary students and staff could have been exposed to the disease, the district posted in a message on its website...

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. ? Central District Health Department officials said it is unlikely that the High Plains Community Schools student who died on Thursday had meningococcal meningitis.
Testing has so far indicated the presence of streptococcus pneumoniae and not meningococcal meningitis, which is also called bacterial meningitis.
