Salmonella-uitbraak door gerookte zalm

Publicatiedatum:01-10-2012

Hundreds sickened in Salmonella outbreak originating in Holland

News about: Netherlands

Date: Mon, 1 Oct 2012

THE HAGUE, Oct 01, 2012 - Hundreds of consumers in the Netherlands and the United States have been sickened by salmonella after eating smoked salmon produced at a Dutch fish factory, health authorities said Monday.

In the Netherlands "some 200 people have fallen ill through contaminated salmon" while in the US about 100 people were infected "by the same type of salmonella", said the National Institute for Public Health (RIVM) in the Netherlands.

"The real number of infected people (is) likely to be higher," the RIVM added in a statement, saying smoked salmon made by Dutch fish producer Foppen has been taken off the shelves and removed from storage fridges.

Salmonella outbreak in US and Netherlands tied to smoked salmon
Published October 02, 2012

Smoked salmon tainted with salmonella bacteria has sickened hundreds of people in the Netherlands and the United States, sparking a major recall, health authorities said Tuesday.

The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment said the salmon has been traced to Dutch company Foppen, which sells fish to many major Dutch supermarkets and to stores around the world, including the United States.

The institute said in a statement that around 200 people ? and likely more ? in the Netherlands and more than 100 people in the United States have been sickened.

Foppen also estimated the number of infections was higher...

Although there's not been an official recall notice issued yet, media reports that the salmon in question is only sold through Costco in the U.S.

CBS News:

"...<Foppen spokesman> De Vries said that in the U.S., Foppen sells only to wholesaler Costco and that Costco would deal with any U.S. recall. It was not immediately clear how much contaminated fish had been sold in America. A Costco representative did not immediately have that information.

Costco got a call from Foppen regarding the recall late Monday afternoon, said Craig Wilson, vice president of food safety at Costco.

He said Costco immediately pulled the items from shelves and blocked its sale in stores, meaning the products won't scan at registers.

The smoked salmon was sold under the Foppen name, as well as under Costco's store-brand name, Kirkland."

Dutch patient dies from salmonella

by The Canadian Press -

Oct 13, 2012 /

The Dutch public health watchdog says at least one elderly patient has died and more than 500 people have been sickened in a major salmonella outbreak caused by tainted salmon.

The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment said in a statement Saturday tests have confirmed one death and another fatality is under investigation. Both victims were aged over 80.

The institute announced earlier this month that the outbreak had been traced to a Dutch company called Foppen and ordered its products pulled off shelves at stores across the Netherlands.

It now says the number of people sickened by tainted salmon before the recall has risen to at least 550.

CostCo Wholesale Corp., which sells Foppen products in the United States, also recalled salmon products.
