NEW DELHI: Twelve-year-old Gauri Venu, a resident of Dwarka, became the fifth victim of H1N1 influenza in the capital on Thursday. Gauri died due
to acute respiratory distress syndrome around 2.30pm at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. Doctors at the hospital said that she too was brought to the hospital very late and had undergone treatment in a private hospital.
"She was admitted six days back in a serious state. She was an epilepsy patient
and her condition deteriorated with each passing day. For the past two days she was on ventilator, but her lungs had stopped responding to treatment,'' said Dr N K Chaturvedi, medical superintendent, RML Hospital.
On Thursday, a 67-year-old man from Rewari (Haryana) died due to a heart problem
at Metro Heart Institute in Lajpat Nagar. But his sample also tested positive for H1N1 influenza. "This was not a Delhi case. His sample tested positive in a private lab, but the death is said to be due to his existing heart problem. As the patient was admitted in the hospital, the Delhi government has provided prophylactic treatment to the staff, especially to doctors and nurses who came in close contact with him,'' said Dr Anjan Prakash, additional nodal officer, Delhi government.
So far, 1096 positive cases have been reported in the capital. "Of the 66 cases reported on Thursday, 42 are children and a majority of them have been advised home quarantine. At present, we have 24 people admitted to various government hospitals,'' said Dr Prakash.
The condition of two patients a 35-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman admitted to RML Hospital is said to be critical. "The woman is an old asthma patient and the man has diabetes. Both are on ventilator. They were brought to the hospital in a serious condition,'' said Dr Chaturvedi.
