A severe earthquake has struck north-east of Milford Sound this morning.

The 5.1 magnitude quake hit at 7.41am at a depth of 6km, and was located 10km north-east of Milford Sound.

GeoNet said the intensity was "severe", which is when the tremor is expected to measure 7 or greater on the Modified Mercalli scale..
