5-year-old Durham student dies from possible meningitis

DURHAM ? A 5-year old girl died Wednesday morning from a possible case of meningitis.

The girl attended Mount Zion Christian Academy, located on Fayettville Street. The diagnosis is unofficial but officials have taken precaution by giving the nine students she came in contact with preventative antibiotics, said Eric Nickens, a spokesman for the Durham County Public Health Department. The students will not be tested for meningitis, but Nickens says the antibiotics will take care of the symptoms that could occur...

Three more children have received preventive antibiotics from the Durham County Health Department because they had come in close contact with the 5-year-old girl from Mt. Zion Christian Academy who died Wednesday from suspected bacterial meningitis.

Nine other children who attended kindergarten with Leah Anglin received post-exposure antibiotics earlier this week...
