Student diagnosed with whooping cough

School officials announced this week that a fourth grade student at Meadow Pond Elementary School had been diagnosed with pertussis, also known as whooping cough. While the district emphasized that "there was no cause for alarm," a letter to parents on Monday encouraged them to contact their child's doctor if the child develops a persistent cough.

Pertussis is a bacterial infection which causes an uncontrollable, violent cough lasting weeks or months, according to the state heath department. It may begin with cold-like symptoms or a dry cough that can lead to severe coughing.

While most children receive vaccines against pertussis, in some people vaccines may not work. In such cases, children rely on "herd immunity" ? everyone around them being immunized ? to avoid infection. According to the district, the child at Meadow Pond was infected despite their vaccination.

The New York State Department of Health, Bureau of Immunization, recently was notified that a person diagnosed with pertussis, also known as whooping cough, attended the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Ice Hockey Championships at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.

NYSPHSAA officials, in turn, have notified members of the state hockey committee and section representatives from around the state, including New Hartford High School coach John Cunningham, chairman of the state tournament...

...According to the notification from the Department of Health (DOH), the contact dates were Friday and Saturday, March 12-13. Practices were held March 12, and four games were played at the Aud the following day...

Saratoga and Cunningham?s New Hartford Division II state champion Spartans, were two of eight teams participating in the March 13-14 tournament...
