VRE closes hospital unit to new admissions

An outbreak of the VRE superbug detected last Sunday at the Owen Sound hospital has closed medical unit 6-1 to new patients.
Three patients are part of the the first VRE outbreak since February, 2010 in the Owen Sound hospital, said Sonja Glass, chief quality officer at Grey Bruce Health Services, in an interview Friday.
The Health ministry considers an outbreak has occurred when three patients become infected with VRE while in hospital during the same stay. In this case, one of the patients has since gone home, Glass said.
Three other patients in hospital Friday, who already had VRE when admitted, aren't counted as part of the outbreak because the outbreak didn't give it to them, she said. All are being kept in isolation, she said.
Tests to identify the VRE germ subtypes in the patients who are not part of the outbreak may help identify whether any of them was the source of VRE contamination in the outbreak group, Glass said...
