In fact, the links between 1918 and 1919 influenza pandemic

was largely discussed in the literature [3?5]. The main argument
32
against this association is the fact that modern attempts to find
33
evidence of the influenza virus in 1918?1919 encephalitic brains
34
generally led to negative results [5,7]. However, it is well known
35
that the chances of finding viral nucleic acid in archival brains are
36
low. In contrast, some authors underlined chronologic connections
37
between influenza and the encephalitis and suggested that the epi-
38
demic encephalitis could be due to toxins released by influenza [6].
39
Others evoked either peculiar modifications of the influenza virus
40
structure leading to a particularly neurotropic form or a favourising
41
role of influenza in the pathogenicity of another unknown pathogen
42
[6]. Finally, a recent case?control study described a possible asso-
43
ciation between flu infections and occurrence of narcolepsy [8]
