Panic in Doon School as five students get swine flu

NAINITAL: Panic spread in one of Dehradun?s reputed schools, Doon School, after five hostel students were confirmed as swine flu positive cases.
School authorities have declined to disclose the names of these students. These students belong to Delhi, Indore, Gurgaon and Lucknow.

Five other suspected cases belonging to Doon School staff members were confirmed as negative, state health officials said. State nodal officer for swine flu, Pankaj Jain, said the flu was confirmed on the basis of the students' separate test reports conducted by National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), Delhi. These reports declaring them as swine flu-positive reached Doon Hospital on Tuesday.

According to Jain, Doon School authorities had brought 10 cases, including the five students, to Doon Hospital on Saturday as they were suffering from cough, cold and fever.

"Taking them as cases of suspected swine flu, we took their samples immediately and sent them to NICD," Jain said.

He said parents of these students had taken their children along with them on Sunday on the advice of the school authorities.

"But we have informed their parents about the health condition of their children," Jain added.

Listing out the preventive steps taken by the school authorities, Doon School headmaster Peter Maclagnin said an arrangement has been made for a separate medical staff and a separate ward has been set up to prevent spread of the disease. He said a temporary ban has been imposed on unnecessary gatherings in the school and all programmes have been cancelled.

Administrative and health officials have asked the school authorities to take measures to prevent the spread of the disease, particularly because a large number of foreign students study there

Lonavla schools shut till Sept 18

PUNE: The Lonavla Municipal Council (LMC) on Thursday decided to shut down all schools in Lonavla till September 18.


LMC chief officer Yogesh Godse said, ?A meeting of school principals was held on Thursday during which it was decided to shut the nearly 35 schools till September 18. The schools will reopen on September 22, after the week-end holidays on 19 and 20.?

The decision was taken after one student from Don Bosco School and Junior College in Lonavla tested positive for the H1N1 flu. Fifteen more students have shown flu-like symptoms.

4 more Doon students test positive for (A)H1N1

The prestigious Doon School on Thursday suspended its classes and other activities like assemblies and sports till September 21 in the wake of some students testing positive for swine flu.


Five students tested positive for H1N1 virus on Tuesday and four cases were detected on Wednesday.
A spokesperson of the school said there were no fresh cases on Thursday and the school continues to work closely with state health authorities. ?We are monitoring the situation on the campus continuously and our doctor is keeping the authorities fully informed,? he said.

Denying media reports that the school has been shut, the spokesman said, ?This is not the case. We still have boys, staff and employees on campus,? adding the school would resume lessons on September 22.

Headmaster Peter McLaughlin said: ?The school is not shut but classes have been suspended. All are free to go home and if they wish they can stay in the campus.?
Meanwhile, in the wake of the outbreak of the virus in Doon, the Uttarakhand health department has advised all schools in the hill state like Welham, Sherwood and Woodstock to keep a close watch on the students.

AURANGABAD: Amidst rising cases of swine flu among schoolchildren in Pune, two schoolboys tested positive in Latur on Friday.


The finding has prompted a worried school management to declare a two-day holiday for the high school section. The management has also roped in a team of ten prominent private doctors on Saturday to examine all the 1000 students.

"Fifteen of the students were found suffering from cold and cough and doctors have advised them a few days' rest," said Shailesh Lahoti, the vice-president of the education society running the two institutions Shri Bankatlal Lahoti English School and Raj Narayanlal Lahoti CBSE English School.

The two class IX students of Shri Bankatlal school, both classmates and sons of doctors living on the civil hospital premises (where a ward has been quarantined for the swine flu patients), were detected with swine flu symptoms. Following which the school's governing council decided to given two- day holiday to about 250 students of the senior section beginning Friday, said Lahoti. Special cleanliness measures like spraying disinfectant, have been taken as a precautionary measure, he said.

School principal Sunita Deshmukh said that though there was no cause for worry we have to take precautionary measures to avoid spread of the flu. There are over 750 students in the KG to 7th section. Only, the senior school students were given holidays, as those found infected were studying in the senior classes. The classes would resume on Monday, Deshmukh said.

S S Patil, the deputy director of health services, Latur, said that the number of H1N1 positives cases in the division has increased to 72. Of them nine patients are being treated in different hospitals of the division including six patients in Latur. The Latur patients include two students of the Bankatlal Lahoti School, he said. One patient each is being treated at Osmanabad, Beed and Latur, Patil said.

Till date 39,541 people were examined in the division, of which 430 were isolated while 354 throat swabs were sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune. We received NIV reports in 417 cases that confirmed H1N1 virus in 72 cases, Patil added.

The swine flu situation in the other division in Marathwada comprising Aurangabad, Jalna, Parbhani and Hingoli was near normal, said Vilas Nikam, the assistant director of health services, Aurangabad. The number of people approaching government hospitals has come down considerably while the number of positive swine flu patients remained constant at 27, he said. Presently, eight suspected H1N1 flu patients are being treated at different hospitals and their condition is good, he added.
