Peru reports decline in child mortality due to respiratory disease
A total of 137 Peruvian children under five have died in Peru from acute respiratory infections (ARI) in so far this year, 4 percent less than the same period of 2009, reported on July 11 the Ministry of Health (MoH) .
The Regional Directorate of the Department of Puno, on the border with Bolivia (South), reported that from January to date have treated 45 332 IRA and 521 cases of pneumonia, while emphasizing a lower rate of mortality and affected, a situation he attributed preventive campaigns.
In the provinces of Andahuaylas and Chincheros in the department of Apurimac (southeast), which already reach minimum temperatures near zero degrees Celsius, about 9,000 children receive health care on a permanent basis.
"We are mobilizing three integrated brigades of doctors and nurses. It also distributed 19 288 polar divers to lessen the impact of the cold and reduce child mortality," said the director of the NGO Solaris Peru, Carmen Pisfil, who works in coordination with Civil Defense Committee Andahuaylas and the Health Apurimac-II.
The director general of Epidemiology Minsa, Luis Suarez, said the most common signs of IRAs are fever, cough, rapid breathing, and collapse of the skin below the ribs.
Su?rez drew attention to the issue of influenza A (H1N1), noting that the number of deaths increased to 19 so far this year.
Officials recommended that people reinforce hygiene and hand washing with the forearm covered by sneezing to prevent the new flu.
After ruling out a resurgence of the disease, Suarez pointed out that the people who died suffered from metabolic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, obesity, and pregnant women and asthmatics.
The general director said Minsa Epidemiology, reported cases of patients with influenza A (H1N1) in the first five months this year total more than 320, mostly in Lima, with 264 patients, followed by Jun?n (center) with 39 and Lambayeque (northwest) with 18.
Suarez called on the country's population to be vaccinated to protect against the deadly influenza virus.
"The vaccine is prioritized for those at higher risk of dying because the virus is particularly aggressive in them, should not be more deaths if we have the vaccine, people must take responsibility to protect" he said.
He clarified that can not be immunized people allergic to eggs or who have presented severe reactions (anaphylaxis) to previous vaccination against seasonal influenza vaccine for yellow fever. (Xinhua)
