Measles cases soar by 157%

THE Department of Health?s Regional Epidemiological and Surveillance Unit (Resu) reported that measles cases in the Cordillera Administrative Region increased by 157 percent.

Suspected measles cases rose to 77 this year compared to 30 cases reported from January 1 to May 18 last year.

DOH-Cordillera Resu head Elnoria Bugnosen said that out of the 77 suspected cases in the region, some 17 cases are already laboratory confirmed to be measles.

Among the areas with suspected measles cases include Baguio City, Itogon and La Trinidad in Benguet, and Lamut in Ifugao...

MANILA, Philippines - Kalibo in Aklan province has been put under state of calamity due to outbreak of measles in the town...

...The regional office of the Department of Health also recorded 15 cases of measles in the town, most of which were in Brgy. Andagao.

In the entire Western Visayas, the health department also reported 24 cases of measles.

Since January this year, the the Aklan Provincial Health Office registered some 77 suspected measles cases...Of these suspected cases, two persons reportedly had died...

Measles cases double in CAR

MEASLES continue to spread all over the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) as the number of cases recorded increased to 224 percent.

The Department of Health's (DOH) latest monthly disease surveillance report revealed measles tops the list of illnesses with the highest increase by percentage.

The report covers January to August 31 this year.

The report revealed measles had 224 percent increase followed by meningitis with 81 percent hike, acute encephalitis syndrome (67 percent), and non ? neonatal tetanus with 57 percent increase.

Last year, there were 49 suspected cases of measles in the region where it grew to 159 in 2013...

Health agency notes 200% increase in measles cases

...The DOH Regional Epidemiology Surveillance Unit reported last week measles cases in the region increased to 164 recorded from Jan. 1 to Sept. 14 this year.

This represents more than 200 percent increase compared to 52 cases recorded by the health agency during the same period last year.

Despite the increase, the DOH said only one death due to the illness was recorded during the nine-month period.

DOH records show Baguio City has the highest number of cases with 48 compared to 16 last year. Benguet posted the highest increase with over 500 percent from seven cases last year to 44 cases this year.

From a zero case last year, Ifugao also recorded 38 cases since January, while Apayao and Abra have 14 and 13 cases, respectively. Kalinga and Mountain Province have four and two cases, respectively.

One case involving a resident from outside the region was also recorded by the DOH...

KALIBO, Aklan -- Measles continue to affect more people in Aklan province, including indigenous people, according to the Aklan Provincial Health Office.

Dr. Cornelio Cuatchon said that as of October 7, at least 324 cases were reported to their office with two confirmed deaths in Libacao town...

MANILA ? The World Health Organization and the Philippine Department of Health have launched a campaign to immunize as many as 1 million children against measles in areas of central Philippines pounded by Typhoon Haiyan.

The immediate goal is to reach the 500,000 children in the hardest-hit areas, who, even before the storm, were vulnerable to diseases because of widespread poverty, said Julie Hall, who heads the Manila office of the WHO. The children also need their immune systems boosted with vitamin A and will be vaccinated against polio.

The measles vaccines are immediately available. But getting them to needy children is challenging. The vaccines need to be kept in cold storage, but there isn?t electricity in many of the affected areas and some spots remain inaccessible to land vehicles...

Department of Health ? National Capital Region (DOH-NCR) Director Eduardo C. Janairo today warned residents of Metro Manila on the rapid increase of measles cases in some parts of Metro Manila particularly in the cities of Las Pi?as, Muntinlupa, Caloocan, Manila, and Paranaque...

...Partial reports from the Regional Epidemiology Surveillance Unit showed a total of 179 confirmed measles cases from January 1 to December 10, 2013. The figure is 616% higher compared to the same period last year with only 25 cases recorded. Ages of cases ranged from 1 month to 37 years. Most of those affected were the 1- 4 years age-group. Majority were male. Two deaths were reported, from Malabon City and Muntinlupa City.

Among the cities with most number of measles cases were Las Pi?as with 44 cases, Muntinlupa with 32, Caloocan ? 26, Manila - 22, Para?aque - 15, Malabon ? 10, Quezon ? 8, Taguig ? 8, Navotas ? 7, Pasay ? 4, Makati ? 2 and Pasig with 1 recorded measles case. The cities of Mandaluyong, Marikina, San Juan, Valenzuela and municipality of Pateros have recorded zero case of measles for 2013...
