Phuket operates strict checks on poultry entering the island to prevent bird flu.

Officials from the Phuket Live Stock Development Office and responsible agencies used spray against bird flu at two local farms in Phuket in Wichit sub-districts. The two farms are reported to be free of the disease. The operation is part of the authority?s preventive measures against the disease by working closely with local administrative bodies. A strict check point has also been set up around the clock at Tha Chart Chai, the only land gateway to enter Phuket. Phuket houses 32 poultry farms with around 300,000 birds which the Provincial Livestock office confirmed to be bird flu free. Since the spread of bird flu in 2004, Phuket Island has been very strict with the entry of poultry or eggs as they check on original farms before permitting any entry of the products.
