? Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged Turks on Friday not to hide poultry to avoid bird flu culls, and promised that the government would spend what was necessary to fight the spread of the disease and to compensate farmers for slaughtered stocks.
The European Commission said it had confirmed that the bird flu in Turkey was the deadly H5N1 strain.
A World Health Organisation team is headed for eastern Turkey, where three people have died and 26 are under observation, an unusual cluster of cases that raises the possibility that the virus has become more contagious for humans.
