Ziad Memish, the deputy health minister, has been one of Saudi Arabia?s most visible government figures on the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus, or MERS, which has sickened more than 130 people in eight countries so far. Saudi Arabia has experienced most of the cases and deaths since the new MERS virus was identified in September 2012.
A specialist in infectious diseases, Dr. Memish has served in advisory groups for the World Health Organization and other international health institutions.
