Romania's Ministry of Health reported 1,737 additional cases of measles in the last month (from 2,942 on January 9 to 4,679 on February 6), including 6 deaths.

The 4,679 confirmed cases of measles have been reported in 39 counties and the city of Bucharest since 2023.

The highest incidence is recorded in the counties of Braşov (173.15 cases per 100,000 inhabitants) and Mureş (167.87 cases per 100,000 inhabitants).

On December 5, 2023, the Ministry of Health declared a nationwide measles epidemic when nearly 2,000 measles cases were reported. The objective of the emergency declaration was to enable the vaccination of children between 9 and 11 months, as well as the recovery of those who were not vaccinated or with an incomplete vaccination schedule. In December, the number of cases was 2,000, three months later, in Romania, there were 9,000 measles cases and nine deaths were recorded. 9 out of 10 measles cases are unvaccinated cases, experts say.

The National Institute of Public Health informed that, between January 1, 2023 and March 24, 2024, 9,695 cases of measles were confirmed, reports Agerpres.

In the last week, there were 850 new cases and two deaths: a 26-year-old man, vaccinated against measles (2 doses), with multifactorial immunodepression (long-term corticosteroid therapy) and a 59-year-old woman, unvaccinated antimeasles, with plurifactorial immunodepression, multiple myeloma.

According to INSP, since the beginning of the reporting period, January 1, 2023, there have been 11 deaths due to measles.

The 9,695 confirmed cases of measles were reported in 40 counties and in Bucharest.

The most illnesses were registered in the counties of Brasov - 1,526 and Mureş - 1,074 and in Bucharest - 1,127.

Between December 6, 2023 and March 24, 2024, according to data extracted from the RENV, 104,003 doses of MMR vaccine were used, of which 16,755 were for children aged between 9 and 11 months.

Measles is an infectious disease that is easily transmitted, especially in unvaccinated children, and sometimes the evolution is serious and complications may occur.

Vaccination coverage with the first dose, at the national level, is 78%, and with the second dose, 62% of eligible children, being on a downward trend for more than 10 years.

The vaccination law voted by the Senate in 2017 provides that immunization becomes mandatory for children according to the national vaccination calendar, and in case of an epidemic with the appropriate vaccines. The document was blocked at the Chamber of Deputies, the decision-making body.

A 41-year-old man from Sibiu died of measles. He was treated at home and ended up in hospital in serious condition

The Directorate of Public Health (DSP) Sibiu announced on Thursday, through a press release, that a 41-year-old man died of measles, after being treated at home, reports Agerpres.

"Death due to measles in an adult. It is a 41-year-old man from Vurpăr, initially hospitalized through the UPU at the Sibiu Pneumophthiziology Hospital, on 04/05, with fever, muscle pain, cough, general condition. The symptoms started about 10 days ago, but the patient did not go to the doctor and was treated without a recommendation, at home. Shortly after admission to the hospital, a skin rash appears, an eruptive disease is suspected and an Infectious Diseases consultation is requested. After the examination, it is recommended to transfer the patient to SCJU - Intensive Care, considering that he was in a state of severe respiratory failure, with the need for oxygen administration, but following his refusal, he was finally admitted to the Infectious Diseases department of SCJU Sibiu", states the DSP Sibiu press release.

However, in the afternoon of the same day, the family requested discharge, on their own responsibility, and the patient went home, but then returned a few hours later, with an altered general condition, and shortly after that, the death occurred, stated the quoted source .

According to DSP Sibiu, "the patient was a family contact of measles, although this fact was found out after hospitalization, because the sick child was not taken to the doctor to be diagnosed and treated.

Also, the patient had severe comorbidities – chronic ischemic cardiopathy, bilateral chronic bronchopneumopathy, with morbid obesity.

At the same time, the vaccination status of the patient with regard to measles is not known, the DSP Sibiu press release also mentions.

"I tried to pull my heart out again, seeing the heart-felt emergency team from our hospital, INSMC, at work. The whole team was gathered around an infant who had been transferred with a very serious condition... This very young child, a few months old, had been brought by SMURD in order to stabilize an extremely severe lung disease. The child was barely breathing, the family was worried, the analyzes were extremely altered, and the radiological appearance of the lungs was difficult to describe. This x-ray showed the same as those recorded during the pandemic, in the worst cases of infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. When I asked the attending physician what illness he had, the answer came like a cold shower: <He had measles two weeks ago> ," writes Dr. Mihai Craiu, primary pediatrician at the "Alessandrescu-Rusescu" Institute for Mother and Child Health in Bucharest , on his Facebook page Virtual Children's Hospital.

The pediatrician also has a categorical message for "skeptics who have the impression that infant measles is just a cold."

In the last week, a child aged one year and six months died from infection with this virus, although he did not report any other known comorbidities. In the first half of this year, a number of 17,378 cases of measles were reported and confirmed by INSP in all the counties of the country but also in the Municipality of Bucharest.

The most cases of illness were reported in the counties of Brașov, Mureș and Bucharest, where their number was 2,031, 1,213 and 1,620, respectively.

Between December 6, 2023 and June 2, 2024, according to data extracted from the RENV, 164,715 doses of MMR vaccine were used, of which 27,058 doses were used for children aged between 9 and 11 months.

UNICEF comes with a grim warning regarding this childhood disease: Romania ranks first in Europe in terms of the number of deaths caused by measles and the number of cases is increasing rapidly throughout the continent.

Measles cases recorded in the first three months of this year almost equaled the total number of illnesses reported throughout last year. Specifically, according to UNICEF, in the first three months of the year, 56,634 cases of measles and four deaths were officially reported. It happened in 45 of the 53 countries in the European region of the World Health Organization.

And the alarming figures do not stop there. During the entire year 2023, 61,070 measles cases and 13 deaths were reported in 41 countries. According to data from the World Health Organization , last year, 3,497 cases of measles and three deaths were registered in Romania. We are talking about a quarter of the deaths recorded in the whole of Europe. This is the reason why last December the Ministry of Health declared a measles epidemic. The decision was also made to make it possible to vaccinate children between the ages of 9 and 11 months, as well as to recover those who are not vaccinated or with an incomplete vaccination schedule.
