</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>Romanian agriculture minister Gheorghe Flutur announced that 18 bird flu outbreaks had been confirmed by Thursday evening and 23 locations are suspected. The minister asked sanitary veterinary departments to check if all measures had been implemented in poultry farms.

"We have evaluated the situation in counties Brasov, Vrancea, Bacau, Covasna, Buzau, Valcea and Sibiu. At the moment there are 18 confirmed outbreaks, 16 of which in Brasov county ? two at Drakom and PatiProd farms and 14 in localities where all the poultry is being culled," the minister told a press conference Thursday evening.

The most suspicions are also in Brasov (11 localities), three more in Bacau county, one in Buzau, three in Vrancea, four in Valcea and one in Sibiu, the minister added.

As for the consumption of poultry meat, Flutur said that almost the entire quantity that was sold by farms in Codlea has been taken off the market.

The general director in the Ministry of Health Rodica Costinea said at the conference that there are no suspicions of bird flu cases in human, but specialists insist upon preventive measures and surveillance. Apart from the "Matei Bals" Institute in Bucharest that has the necessary equipment, a wing of the Infectious Diseases Hospital in Brasov will be prepared Friday for any cases that might come up in the area.

Minister Gheorghe Flutur said a chicken in the major city of Brasov tested positive for the virus late Wednesday. Tests for the virus were also being conducted in 27 other communities, he said.

The latest outbreak of bird flu was discovered over the weekend at the Drakom farm in the central town of Codlea, prompting authorities to recall 220 metric tons of meat from stores nationwide and cull all the birds in 20 communities where live birds from the farm were sold.

Two men and two children from Codlea were sent by ambulance to a Bucharest hospital for testing after showing symptoms of a cold or flu. They were hospitalized and tested for bird flu because they could have come into contact with dead birds, Colentina hospital director Adrian Streinu-Cercel said. He said preliminary test results were expected Friday, the AP reports.

So far, no human cases of H5N1 have been discovered in Romania, the AP reports.

The infection at Drakom is the first in an industrial-size farm. Since October, Romania has had dozens of cases of bird flu in household farms.

Prosecutors detained Thursday a Codlea vet who oversaw local farms, along with the owners of the Drakom farm and the nearby Pati Prod farm, on charges of spreading disease. The three are accused of failing to promptly to inform authorities that chickens were dying in large numbers on the farms.

So the Ministry of Health for Romania says there are no, I repeat no, suspicions of bird flu cases in humans.

Oh really.

Correct me if I am wrong but don't these two men and two children from Codlea qualify as 'suspicious' cases?

DB...it seems officials are being even less forth-coming with information...I suspect its because they don't know how to handle the situation.

Bucharest. The number of the confirmed bird flu foci in Romania has already reached 18, Romania?s Agriculture Minister Gheorghe Flutur announced cited by Mediafax.

There are doubts [suspicions] that the bird flu virus has spread to 23 other residential areas as well.

The highest number of bird flu foci ? 27 ? has been registered in district of Brasov (central Romania), which is the source of the disease that started spreading 10 days ago.

Bird flu cases have been also registered in five other districts around the country.

Meanwhile it was announced that the four patients admitted in Bucharest hospital with bird flu symptoms are not infected with the disease.

BUCHAREST, May 19 (Reuters) - Preliminary tests show traces of avian flu in the Romanian capital for the first time since it was detected in poultry in the Danube delta last October, an official said on Friday.

Gabriel Predoi, a top official at the Animal Health Agency, said preliminary tests showed the presence of a bird flu strain in three hens in Bucharest.

"The rapid test showed the presence of the H5 virus on the outskirts of Bucharest," Predoi told Reuters. "All poultry from the two households were culled and both places were disinfected."

Predoi said more tests were needed to confirm whether the virus in Bucharest was the deadly H5N1 strain.

Authorities said earlier this week that about 1 million domestic birds might be culled to prevent the spread of avian flu to highly populated areas after H5N1 was detected at a chicken farm 170 km (106 miles) north of Bucharest.

Last week's discovery in the county of Brasov was just a month after the strain was said to have been eradicated in the Black Sea state.

The European Union candidate has culled nearly half a million fowl since discovering the first bird flu case in the Danube delta, Europe's largest wetlands, last October. It has not reported any cases in humans.
