Woman Suffering from Swine Flu Dies in Bolivia

LA PAZ ? A 59-year-old woman with the H1N1 flu virus died in eastern Bolivia, but her case is under study to determine if her death was due to that disease or to the other health problems she had, a high-level Health Ministry official said.

The woman had been receiving treatment for several weeks at a private clinic in the eastern region of Santa Cruz and died Thursday, Health Ministry Influenza Program director Rene Lenis said.

?One must take into account that this patient had several basic pathologies: diabetes, hypertension and renal insufficiency in the final stage. As such, we feel that the patient died from those basic problems she had. We could say that she died with AH1N1, but not because of the flu,? Lenis said.

Although authorities are not saying that this is the first fatality from the swine flu here in 2010, the case is being analyzed by a Santa Cruz scientific technical committee that will establish whether the woman died from that disease or from some other cause, Lenis said.

People who suffer from chronic illnesses and have symptoms of the flu should ?immediately? go to a health center to receive treatment against swine flu, Lenis said.

So far this year, five cases of swine flu have been confirmed in two of Bolivia?s nine provinces, although in 2009 there were 59 deaths from among the country?s 2,352 registered cases of the disease.

Health officials say that on Sunday they will begin vaccinating 1.3 million people against the swine flu, including pregnant women, people with chronic illnesses and health personnel who provide care for people infected with AH1N1.

President Evo Morales? administration purchased 400,000 doses of vaccine against the disease at a cost of $3.5 million, while the other 900,000 were donated by the World Health Organization.
