Two more Scots have died after contracting swine flu, the Scottish Government said on Sunday.

The two deaths take the total number who have died in Scotland with the virus to 12.

The Scottish Government said both patients, a 42-year-old man from Glasgow and a 75-year-old man from the Grampian region, had underlying health conditions.

No further details of the two who have died are to be released at the request of their families.

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said: "I'd like to express my sincere condolences to the friends and family of both patients at this very sad time.

"In the vast majority of cases, most people have fairly mild symptoms and make a full recovery within a week.

"But it is important that you get the help you need as quickly as possible if you are at greater risk."

A European action plan to tackle the issue was announced in April but Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead said Scotland wanted to go further.

Man and woman die from swine flu

The man and woman contracted the H1N1 strain of the virus

A further two people have died in Scotland after contracting swine flu, bringing the total number of Scottish deaths to 14.

The Scottish government said the latest deaths were an 81-year-old woman and a man aged 48 with "significant underlying health conditions".

The woman was from Fife, while the man was from the Greater Glasgow area.

The government has stressed that most people with swine flu have mild symptoms and recover within a week.

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said: "Our thoughts are with the families and friends of both patients, and I express my sincere condolences to everyone who knew them.

"Vaccination is the best defence we have against the H1N1 virus and Scotland is preparing very well for the first phase of the vaccination programme which is due to start later this month."
