Sepsis: Calming the cytokine storm
Charlotte Harrison
Abstract
The innate immune system releases multiple inflammatory cytokines in response to pathogens, and these cytokines directly combat the infectious agent and recruit additional immune responses. However, this cytokine release can become uncontrolled — known as a cytokine storm — and lead to detrimental effects such as leakage from capillaries, tissue oedema, organ failure and shock.
