EDGEWOOD, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky Health District told swimming pools in its jurisdiction to restrict children who aren't toilet trained from swimming.

The move comes after an outbreak of Shigella. Shigella is a bacteria carried in fecal matter that, if ingested, can cause nausea, vomiting and diarea.

Update on Shigella outbreak in NKY

At around 4:40 p.m. today the Northern Kentucky Health Department sent out the following release about the number shigella cases reported in Northern Kentucky. So far there have been confirmed closures of Taylor Mill Swim Club and the Florence Aquatic Center. For more information on the outbreak of shigella contact the health department at www.nkyhealth.org

As of June 14, 81 cases have been reported, an increase of seven cases. In a typical year, 25 cases are reported. Case updates will be posted on our Web site at http://www.nkyhealth.org on Tuesdays for the duration of the outbreak...

FORT MITCHELL, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky Health Department says there is an outbreak of Shigella and Crypto, both are illnesses that hits kids hard where they play—at day cares and pools.

There have been more than 125 cases of Shigella reported in Boone, Campbell, Grant and Kenton counties since April. The norm is about 25 for an entire year.​

Shigella and Crypto are bacterial illnesses that can be spread at public swimming pools or anywhere there are a lot of kids.​
