Chickenpox claims two lives in the last month

The provincial department of health says it has noted peaks in varicella (chickenpox) cases at health facilities, especially in the Frances Baard municipality.

A spokesperson for the department, Lulu Mxekezo, said more than 80 cases were treated in Frances Baard last month, while the virus had claimed two lives.

?A young man from Barkly West died after developing complications from chickenpox.

?The second fatality was a young woman from Kimberley.

?Varicella or chickenpox is endemic in the Northern Cape province.? Mxekezo said the infections occurred mostly in children...
