Dengue hospitalises 26 people in Solomons

An WHO epidemiologist says 26 people in Solomon Islands have been hospitalised with severe dengue fever but there are no deaths from the latest outbreak.

Four new cases of dengue fever were detected in Gizo yesterday and there are now more than 300 suspected cases in Honiara...

Health Authorities Overwhelmed by Dengue Outbreak
The outpatient at the national referral hospital is now inundated with cases of dengue fever.

Health authorities are now alerting those in Honiara of an outbreak of dengue fever, which has so far amounted to well over 400 confirmed cases since January 2013. There are also well over 800 suspected cases.

?The truth is we are simply overwhelmed, there are not enough beds, even for the most seriously ill?we have had to put extra beds outside the outpatient,? said one of the nurses spoken to...

...As of February 28th, 379 suspected dengue cases have been reported in Honiara, and four rapid diagnostic test positive cases were reported in Gizo, Western province.

No deaths have been reported.

This number continues to increase, reminding us all to take precautions to protect ourselves and our families from dengue...

Solomons confirms over 150 dengue cases in capital

Solomon Islands health authorities have confirmed more than 150 cases of dengue fever in the capital.

The ministry of health says there are 162 confimed cases and nearly 400 suspected cases of dengue, since the outbreak began at the end of January...

THE ministry of health and medical services yesterday refuted media reports of four deaths as a result of the dengue fever outbreak in the country.

This was after a front page story on local newspaper the Island Sun claimed that four people have died as a result of the virus spread in Honiara...

...He also revealed that out of the 509 suspected dengue cases, 169 have been tested positive for dengue fever having gone through the Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) system.

Honiara has the highest number of dengue fever cases, with Guadalcanal, Western Province and Malaita falling in behind...

State of Emergency Declared on Denghue Outbreak

Health authorities in Solomon Islands have declared a state of emergency this week as dengue fever cases continue to rise drastically.

A doctor at the National Referral Hospital said the dengue fever outbreak has stretched the resources of the National Referral Hospital.

?It is getting really tense here,? the doctor said.

He said the declaration was made in light of the mounting stress which stretched the hospital?s manpower and resources...

Dengue claims another life

The dengue fever has claimed another life making it two deaths so far in the country.

This was confirmed by permanent secretary of the ministry of health Dr Lester Ross yesterday in a radio talk-back show over SIBC.

He said out of the 74 confirmed cases and 28 severe cases being recorded at the National referral hospital two lives have been claimed so far...

THE Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS) yesterday revealed that the number of confirmed dengue fever cases in Honiara has exceeded 400.

This was within the span of a month after the first case of the deadly virus was diagnosed in early February this year.

According to information given to this paper by the ministry?s Health Promotion Division, over the past month, the virus has spread rapidly in Honiara alone, at an alarming rate of little more than three cases diagnosed each day...

Dengue reported cases now stands at 2,226

THE number of confirmed reported cases of dengue fever has reached 2,226, according to the latest surveillance cluster situation report of the Ministry of Health released on Friday.

As of the 5th of April (yesterday), five hundred and eighty eight (588), which is equivalent to 40 percent of cases, has been tested positive and the number of reported cases was said to keep increasing.

Permanent Secretary Dr Lester Ross said the trend is increasing and health authorities with its partners are working hard to address the outbreak.

Dr Ross said the outbreak is active and ongoing especially in Honiara where 90.4 percent of cases have been reported...

The Dengue Fever outbreak in Solomon Islands is continuing to spread with cases now appearing around the country.

The first cases appeared after the country was hit by a deadly earthquake and tsunami in January now there are over 2,000 infected people.

Australia and New Zealand have sent medical teams to Honiara to help fight the epidemic.

Caroline Tiriman asked the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Doctor Lester Ross about developments...

CENTRAL Province has recorded its first eight dengue fever cases as the Honiara outbreak spills into the provinces.

The province?s acting health director Dr Steven Tanihorara told the Solomon Star yesterday the eight cases are confirmed.

?We?ve referred to serious patients to Honiara early this week while another six were admitted at Tulagi Hospital,? Dr Tanihorara said...

The Ministry of Health in Solomon Islands says the outbreak of dengue fever is expected to continue for at least another month.

The Ministry says the number of confirmed cases has exceeded 2,700 and the number of confirmed cases has risen to 720...

Dengue Active and Rising: Health Authorities

The Permanent Secretary for Health and Medical Services says the dengue fever outbreak is still active and is not showing any signs of slowing down.

Dr Lester Ross says the ministry's latest Cluster Surveillance Report of 18 April has recorded a total of 3,189 reported dengue cases.

He says this is an increase of 485 from the previous week.

Dr Ross says 849 cases have since tested positive through the Rapid Diagnostic Testing method.

Honiara has so far recorded the highest prevalence of dengue fever with 89 per cent of reported cases...

THE dengue fever death toll has risen to five, health authorities revealed yesterday.

The number remained at four until last week when the latest death was recorded. All deaths occurred in Honiara.
Head of the dengue fever taskforce Dr Tenneth Dalipanda said the number of confirmed cases has also risen to 3,749.

This was an increase of 560 cases from the previous report.

THE number of dengue fever cases has risen to 5,569 from the previously recorded 4,269, but the death toll remains at six, health authorities revealed yesterday.

Reported RDT-positive cases went up to 1,272 cases, an additional 62 positive cases from last report.

Acting Principle Health Promotion Officer Anne Toncan said despite the increases, there is a decline in the number of reported cases over the last two weeks...
