At least five children have died of measles in Lower Shabelle region in southern Somalia, witnesses said Monday.

Somalia: Medics Say Health Conditions in Garbaharey Very Bad

Garbaharey ? Medical officials in Gedo region on Saturday said that the health conditions in Garbaharey town are very bad and precarious.

The medics noted that the displaced people in IDPs camps in the town are the worst hit by the bad health.

The displaced people are suffering from many disorders including diarrhea, measles, whooping cough and others.

Region's health officials said that at least 5 people died from bad health after failing to receive medical care.

Separately, health sources noted that 10 people mainly toddlers died of diarrhea in the district of Hobyo in Mudug region in central Somalia.

Since January 2011, 5176 suspected measles cases were reported in South and Central Somalia alone. In July 2011 alone, 1019 suspected measles cases and 31 related deaths have been reported in South and Central Somalia, representing almost 20% of all reported cases for this year. Compared with the same period in 2010, the number of suspected measles cases has increased by 660%.

The major factors driving this increase are low vaccination coverage, malnutrition, population movement and over-crowded IDP camps.

Mogadishu ? More than 15 children have of died of measles and diarrhea diseases in the internally displaced camps in Mogadishu, the capital of war torn Somalia.

The IDPs in the neighborhood of Hosh in Mogadishu's Dharkenyley district said that diseases, lack of health care and food had precipitated the death of those children...
