Public health officials are urging western South Dakotans to be wary of an outbreak of a disease that causes severe diarrhea and is particularly prevalent among children.
Rapid City and counties around the Black Hills are reporting a sharp rise in cases of Shigellosis, an illness caused by a family of bacteria called Shigella. The disease typically spurs diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps for five to seven days.
Since late last year, the South Dakota Department of Health has recorded more than 500 cases of Shigellosis, compared to 11 in 2012...
