Sudden poultry death triggers avian flu fear in Tripura village
Agartala, Dec 5: The Tripura Government has sent a specialist team to Kalayanpur rural block under West Tripura this morning following the report of sudden death of chicks and ducks in a village yesterday, which has triggered fear of H5N1 avian influenza spread.


Animal Resource Development (ARD) Deputy Director Dr Shyamal Dasgupta said here today as many as 40 poultry birds died in a day in the village while the villagers confirmed that several crocks and wild birds were also found dead in the past two-three days.

Dr Dasgupta pointed out, ''ARD officials have already collected sample and sent to laboratory and if the presence of H5N1 virus found, the sample will be sent to Belgachhia animal research laboratory and Bhopal for further investigation but initially it appears to Ranikhet disease (Newcastle disease - Ro).'' He also said the department had already taken preventive measures to contain further spread and to arrest the panic and added the department had asked the villagers not to sell the birds.

Agartala, Dec 5 (PTI) The death of a few crows and chicks triggered alarm of an outbreak of avian flu at Teliamura in West Tripura district, but the authorities ruled out the possibility. Two crows and seven chicks were found dead during the past 24 hours triggering panic of bird flu at Kalyanpur in entire Teliamura subdivision, officials said here today. "Initial inputs rule out possibility of avian flu outbreak," Director of Animal Resource Development department, Manoranjan Sarkar, said after a team of the District Investigation Laboratory headed by Shyamal Dasgupta, collected samples

Bird flu scare in West Tripura

Agartala, Dec. 5: Largescale death of ducks and poultry chickens in Kalyanpur under West Tripura?s Teliamura subdivision has created fresh fears of a bird flu outbreak.

Similar reports of bird flu outbreak had poured in from Mohanpur under Sadar (north) subdivision early last month, but specialists from animal resource department later attributed the deaths to ?Ranikhet? disease.

Kalyanpur BDO D.K.Reang said over the past one week more than 300 poultry chickens and ducks had died in poultry farms in Ghilatoli Bazar colony, Ampura, Moharcherra and Dushki villages.

Shyamal Dasgupta, deputy director of animal resource department, said, ?We have examined the surviving animals and collected samples for testing from seven dead chickens. We did not find traces of bird flu, but unless the samples are tested in laboratories in Bhopal, we cannot be sure.?
