One person in Rhode Island has contracted salmonella, 28 have fallen ill in other states and officials believe it may be related to peanut butter sold at Trader Joe's.

The state Department of Health is warning consumers of possibly contaminated peanut butter sold at Trader Joe's.

Trader Joe's brand Valencia Creamy Salted Peanut Butter made with sea salt with use by dates of 5/23/2013 and 6/28/2013 may be related to a multi-state outbreak of salmonella bredeney infection, the health department said in a release.

There have been 29 cases of illness, with one illness reported in Rhode Island...

"Trader Joe's Valencia Creamy Salted Peanut Butter may be at the center of a multistate Salmonella S. Bredeny outbreak, according to warnings from multiple state departments of health.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health, the Rhode Island Department of Health and the Massachusetts Department of Health said Friday that each is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to pinpoint the cause of 29 illnesses nationwide, including at least two cases in PA, three in MA and one in NY & RI. Maryland also has at least one case.

"Trader Joe's has voluntarily removed the product for sale from its stores; however, consumers who have the product in their homes should discard it and should also be aware that this product is sold online through other retail outlets," said the Pennsylvania state officials, in a release, adding that anyone who recently consumed the product and then became ill should consult their healthcare provider or call the health department.

Rhode Island officials said the affected peanut butter had use by dates between May 23, 2013 and June 28, 2013. "

" Public health investigators are using ...PFGE, to identify cases of illness that may be part of this outbreak. They are using data from PulseNet, the national subtyping network made up of state and local public health laboratories and federal food regulatory laboratories that performs molecular surveillance of foodborne infections.

A total of 29 ill persons infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Bredeney have been reported from 18 states. This number may change as more cases are confirmed.

Among persons for whom information is available, illness onset dates range from June 11, 2012 to September 2, 2012. Ill persons range in age from less than 1 year to 77 years, with a median age of 7 years. Seventy-six percent of ill persons are children under 18 years old. Sixty-four percent of ill persons are male. Among 11 ill persons with available information, 4 (36%) reported being hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.

This PFGE pattern has rarely been seen before in PulseNet, and in the past typically caused 5-8 cases per year.

...Fourteen (100%) of 14 ill persons interviewed report shopping at Trader Joe?s locations across the United States. Twelve (86%) of 14 ill persons report eating Trader Joe?s Valencia Creamy Salted Peanut Butter made with Sea Salt in the week before becoming ill. "

Sept. 24, 2012 -- An ongoing salmonella outbreak first traced to peanut butter sold at Trader Joe's stores now has expanded to include peanut and almond butters sold at Target and other stores.

Trader Joe's Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter comes from Sunland Inc. in Portales, N.M. Sunland now has recalled all of its peanut butter and almond butter products made from May 1 to Sept. 24...

Today's FDA announcement of Sunland's recall also includes a list of the states involved so far. Sunland has recalled over 70 products, sold under 14 different brand names including Archer Farms (Target stores), Earth Balance, and the Sunland brand. You can see a complete list at the FDA link.

Sunland Inc. has expanded its' recall to include tahini, cashew butter and various roasted peanut products.

The FDA announces that environmental samples taken in the Sunland Inc. nut butter production facility show the presence of Salmonella. Further analysis to identify the type of Salmonella is pending. Environmental samples are samples taken from various surfaces in the production or manufacturing facility that would likely harbor bacteria.
Also, testing conducted by the Washington State Department of Agriculture laboratory isolated the outbreak strain from an opened jar of Trader Joe?s Valencia Creamy Peanut Butter collected from a case-patient?s home.
On October 4, Sunland Inc. expanded its ongoing recall to include all products made in the Sunland nut butter production facility between March 1, 2010 and September 24, 2012. The company reports that it is adding 139 products to the recall, bringing the total number of products being recalled by Sunland Inc. to 240.
The expanded recall covers all previously identified Peanut Butter, Almond Butter, Cashew Butter, and Tahini products as well as Roasted Blanched Peanut Products. New product categories being added to the list are several varieties of flavored butters and spreads, including Thai Ginger Butter, Chocolate Butter and Banana Butter.

The expanded recall adds forty-nine (49) products that are currently within the manufacturer?s recommended shelf-life, that is, the ?Best-If-Used-By? dates have not expired. We are moving quickly to learn as much as possible and prevent additional people from becoming ill. We recognize that people will be concerned about this outbreak, and we will continue to provide updates and advice.
What is the Problem and What is Being Done?
The FDA?s top priority is protecting consumers and ensuring the safety of our food supply. The FDA, the CDC and state and local public health officials are investigating a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Bredeney infections linked to peanut butter made by Sunland Inc. of Portales, New Mexico. The linked peanut butter was Trader Joe?s Valencia Creamy Salted Peanut Butter, with a Stock Keeping Unit (SKU) identifier of 97111.
The CDC reports a total of 35 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Bredeney from 19 states.
Once FDA became involved in this fast-moving outbreak investigation, we began coordinating and working closely with the CDC and several state health departments, which have been leading their own investigations. On September 20, FDA, the CDC and the state of California briefed Trader Joe?s on the status of the investigation, and the company voluntarily removed the suspected product from their store shelves. Trader Joe?s has also posted a customer advisory on their internet page and initiated a recall.
As part of its investigation, FDA contacted Sunland Inc., which makes Trader Joe?s Valencia Creamy Salted Peanut Butter. On September 23, FDA and CDC briefed Sunland Inc. on the status of the investigation and the company voluntarily recalled the almond butter and peanut butter products that were manufactured on the same product line as Trader Joe?s Valencia Creamy Salted Peanut Butter between May 1 and September 24, 2012.
On the evening of September 24, Sunland Inc. expanded their recall to about 100 products, which include peanut butter and other products made with nuts and seeds.
On October 5, The FDA announced that environmental samples taken in the Sunland Inc. nut butter production facility show the presence of Salmonella. Further analysis to identify the type of Salmonella is pending. Environmental samples are samples taken from various surfaces in the production or manufacturing facility that would likely harbor bacteria.

What Do Consumers Need To Do?
Consumers should not eat the recalled products. This is especially important for children under the age of 5 years, elderly adults, and people with weak immune systems. All products with ?Best-If-Used-By? dates of March 1, 2011 or later should be discarded or returned immediately.
Consumers who have products which are within their current shelf life (?Best-If-Used-By? dates of October 4, 2012 and later) should return the products to the place of purchase for a full refund or discard them. All expired products (?Best-If-Used-By? dates of October 4, 2012 and earlier) should be discarded.

What are the Symptoms of Salmonellosis?
Most people infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most people recover without treatment.
However, in some people, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. In these patients, the Salmonella infection may spread from the intestines to the blood stream, and then to other body sites and can cause death unless the person is treated promptly with antibiotics.
Who is at Risk?
Children are the most likely to get salmonellosis. The rate of diagnosed infections in children less than five years old is higher than the rate in all other persons. Young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems are the most likely to have severe infections. It is estimated that approximately 400 persons die each year with acute salmonellosis.

The FDA announces that environmental samples taken in the Sunland Inc. nut butter production facility show the presence of Salmonella. Further analysis to identify the type of Salmonella is pending. Environmental samples are samples taken from various surfaces in the production or manufacturing facility that would likely harbor bacteria.
Also, testing conducted by the Washington State Department of Agriculture laboratory isolated the outbreak strain from an opened jar of Trader Joe?s Valencia Creamy Peanut Butter collected from a case-patient?s home.

The FDA announces that, on October 12, Sunland Inc. expanded its ongoing recall to include raw and roasted shelled and in-shell peanuts sold in quantities from 2 ounces to 50 pounds which are within their current shelf life or have no stated expiration date.

Since late September, the FDA, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state and local public health officials have been investigating a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Bredeney infections linked to a peanut butter made by Sunland Inc. As part of the continuing investigation, the FDA has been inspecting the Sunland Inc. production facilities, which include a building in which peanuts are processed and a separate building in which nut butters are made.

FDA testing has found the presence of Salmonella in raw peanuts from the peanut processing facility. Environmental samples taken from this building also show the presence of Salmonella. Environmental samples are samples taken from various surfaces in the production or manufacturing facility that would likely harbor bacteria.

Additionally, FDA analysis has confirmed that environmental samples showing the presence of Salmonella in Sunland’s nut butter facility have a DNA fingerprint that is the same as the outbreak strain of Salmonella Bredeney.

Sunland Inc. reports that it has ceased the production and distribution of all products from both its nut butter facility and its peanut processing facility.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state and local officials are investigating a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Bredeney infections. We are moving quickly to learn as much as possible and prevent additional people from becoming ill. We recognize that people will be concerned about this outbreak, and we will continue to provide updates and advice.

What is the Problem and What is Being Done?

The FDA’s top priority is protecting consumers and ensuring the safety of our food supply. The FDA, the CDC and state and local public health officials are investigating a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Bredeney infections linked to peanut butter made by Sunland Inc. of Portales, New Mexico. The linked peanut butter was Trader Joe’s Valencia Creamy Salted Peanut Butter, with a Stock Keeping Unit (SKU) identifier of 97111.

The CDC reports a total of 35 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Bredeney from 19 states.

Once FDA became involved in this fast-moving outbreak investigation, we began coordinating and working closely with the CDC and several state health departments, which have been leading their own investigations. On September 20, FDA, the CDC and the state of California briefed Trader Joe’s on the status of the investigation, and the company voluntarily removed the suspected product from their store shelves. Trader Joe’s has also posted a customer advisory on their internet page and initiated a recall.

As part of its investigation, FDA contacted Sunland Inc., which makes Trader Joe’s Valencia Creamy Salted Peanut Butter. On September 23, FDA and CDC briefed Sunland Inc. on the status of the investigation and the company voluntarily recalled the almond butter and peanut butter products that were manufactured on the same product line as Trader Joe’s Valencia Creamy Salted Peanut Butter between May 1 and September 24, 2012.

On the evening of September 24, Sunland Inc. expanded their recall to about 100 products, which include peanut butter and other products made with nuts and seeds.

On October 4, Sunland Inc. expanded its ongoing recall to include all products made in the Sunland nut butter production facility between March 1, 2010 and September 24, 2012. What Do Consumers Need To Do?

Consumers should not eat the recalled products. This is especially important for children under the age of 5 years, elderly adults, and people with weak immune systems.

For the raw and roasted peanuts sold by Sunland Inc.:
Consumers who have purchased any of the recalled products are urged to return products within their current shelf life to the place of purchase for a full refund or dispose of them immediately. The “Best-If-Used-By” date or product expiration date is printed on the packaging. The UPC used to identify the recalled products is located below the bar code on all products.

The roasted and roasted/salted peanuts being recalled were distributed during the six month period prior to the recall date (April 12, 2012 – October 12, 2012), and will have best by/expiration dates on the packaging from October 12, 2012 through April 12, 2013.

The raw peanuts being recalled (shelled and in-shell), were distributed during the twelve months prior to the recall date (October 12, 2011 – October 12, 2012), and will have either best by dates from October 12, 2012 through October 12, 2013 on the packaging, or a “Crop Year” marking on the package of 2011 or 2012, up to and including October 12, 2012.

In-shell peanuts that were sold in 2, 5 and 10 pound mesh bags (raw, roasted and salted/roasted) do not include an expiration date on the mesh bags. These products should not be eaten and should be returned to the place of purchase for a full refund or disposed of immediately.

All expired products should be discarded. Customers who purchased products directly from the company’s website should discard the products and contact the company at 1-866-837-1018.

For peanut butter and other nut and seed spreads made by Sunland Inc.:
All products with “Best-If-Used-By” dates of March 1, 2011 or later should be discarded or returned immediately.

Consumers who have products which are within their current shelf life (“Best-If-Used-By” dates of October 4, 2012 and later) should return the products to the place of purchase for a full refund or discard them. All expired products (“Best-If-Used-By” dates of October 4, 2012 and earlier) should be discarded.

What are the Symptoms of Salmonellosis?

Most people infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most people recover without treatment.

However, in some people, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. In these patients, the Salmonella infection may spread from the intestines to the blood stream, and then to other body sites and can cause death unless the person is treated promptly with antibiotics.

Who is at Risk?

Children are the most likely to get salmonellosis. The rate of diagnosed infections in children less than five years old is higher than the rate in all other persons. Young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems are the most likely to have severe infections. It is estimated that approximately 400 persons die each year with acute salmonellosis.

Sunland, Inc. Announces Voluntary Extension of Ongoing Recall To Include Raw and Roasted Shelled and In-Shell Peanuts Due to Possible Health Risk

For Immediate Release-Portales, NM (October 12, 2012) ? Sunland, Inc. today announced that it is extending its ongoing voluntary recall to include raw and roasted shelled and in-shell peanuts processed in its Peanut Processing Plant because the products have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Specifically, the recall is being extended to include raw and roasted peanuts, both in-shell and shelled, which were processed in its Peanut Processing Plant located in Portales, New Mexico, and which are within their current shelf life or have no stated expiration date.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The original recall initiated by the Company on September 24, 2012, included peanut butter and other nut butter products produced in a separate building from where raw and roasted peanuts are processed. The reason for the initial voluntary recall was the potential for the recalled products to be contaminated with Salmonella. At that time, twenty-nine (29) people had reported Salmonella Bredeney PFGE matching illnesses in approximately eighteen (18) states, and of those who had been interviewed at that time, twelve of fourteen reported having eaten the same single product made by the Company. Since the recall was announced, additional confirmed illnesses have been reported. As of October 5, 2012, the total number of confirmed illnesses reported was thirty-five (35). The extension being announced today is the result of the continued joint investigation by the Company and FDA. The Company has ceased the production and distribution of all products from both its Peanut Butter Plant and its Peanut Processing Plant while FDA and the Company continue their investigation.
