Swine Flu "FluMist" and Seasonal Flu "Flu Mist"

I am under the understanding, that the current FluMist initially being shipped out now for the H1N1A Swine Flu virus is "live". The FluMist they use for the Seasonal Flu is also "live". If that is true, these two cannot be given at the same time.

Can seasonal vaccine and novel H1N1 vaccine be administered at the same time?

Inactivated 2009 H1N1 vaccine can be administered at the same visit as any other vaccine, including pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine. Live 2009 H1N1 vaccine can be administered at the same visit as any other live or inactivated vaccine EXCEPT seasonal live attenuated influenza vaccine

Both seasonal and 2009 H1N1 vaccines are available as inactivated and live attenuated (LAIV) formulations. The simultaneous and sequential administration of seasonal and 2009 H1N1 inactivated vaccines is currently being studied. However, existing recommendations are that two inactivated vaccines can be administered at any time before, after, or at the same visit as each other (General Recommendations on Immunization, MMWR 2006;55[RR-15]). Existing recommendations also state that an inactivated and live vaccine may be administered at any time before, after or at the same visit as each other. Consequently, providers can administer seasonal and 2009 H1N1 inactivated vaccines, seasonal inactivated vaccine and 2009 H1N1 LAIV, or seasonal LAIV and inactivated 2009 H1N1 at the same visit, or at any time before or after each other. Live attenuated seasonal and live 2009 H1N1 vaccines should NOT be administered at the same visit until further studies are done. If a person is eligible and prefers the LAIV formulation of seasonal and 2009 H1N1 vaccine, these vaccines should be separated by a minimum of four weeks.

Dr. Manny was just on Fox News talking about the vaccine. Among other things...he mentioned that you could get both at the same time. You might want to give your body a few days in between. He spoke of the fact that the FluMist for SF is live. And egg based. But nothing on getting both live vaccines at the same time.

ACIP makes the following additional recommendations about use of influenza A (H1N1) 2009 monovalent vaccine:

The number of doses of vaccine required for immunization against novel influenza A (H1N1) has not been established. Because vaccine availability is expected to increase over time, vaccine should not be held in reserve for patients who already have received 1 dose but might require a second dose.
Simultaneous administration of inactivated vaccines against seasonal and novel influenza A (H1N1) viruses is permissible if different anatomic sites are used. However, simultaneous administration of live, attenuated vaccines against seasonal and novel influenza A (H1N1) virus is not recommended.
All persons currently recommended for seasonal influenza vaccine, including those aged ≥65 years, should receive the seasonal vaccine as soon as it is available. Recommendations for use of the 2009--10 seasonal influenza vaccine have been published previously (12).


My understanding is there is a waiting period between live virus vaccine, recommnedation is wait 4wks between seasonal and H1N1 vaccine.

Parents infuriated over wait for swine flu vaccine

When pediatrician Tommy Schechtman ran a weekend swine flu vaccination clinic recently, he was forced to deliver bad news to many parents.
Children who got the seasonal flu nasal mist at schools and in his office had to wait another 28 days before taking the swine flu nasal vaccine, all he had at the time.

The children had been vaccinated against a flu strain that was not circulating, rendering them unable to be vaccinated against the strain that actually threatened them.

Some parents screamed at him.

"<!--— 2008(unknown) —-->'You gave my child the seasonal flu mist and now my child is not eligible to get H1N1?'<!--— 2008(unknown) —-->" Schechtman said. "They are upset."
