With three more H1N1 deaths on Monday, the toll in Pune reached 135. While a majority of the patients who have died are outside the city premises, the National Institute of Virology (NIV) director Dr A C Mishra said there was high transmission of the virus. However, the director said ongoing studies have shown there was no resistance to Tamiflu used for swine flu treatment.
Mishra on Tuesday said H1N1 virus is clubbed under Group A of influenza viruses. ?This year, there is sizeable transmission of Group B influenza virus. However, this virus is a mild one and even if people may have taken the vaccination against H1N1 virus it may not provide immunity against influenza from Group B category of viruses,? said Mishra.
According to Dr Pradeep Awate, state surveillance officer, there have been 276 deaths in Maharashtra due to H1N1 virus from April till August this year and Pune continues to register a large number of deaths. Out of the 135 deaths, 36 are from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) limits, 26 from the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) limits, 43 from Pune rural and 30 deaths are from places outside Pune district.
Twenty-year-old Pooja Kokare from Pimpri was suffering from cold, fever and breathlessness from August 10. She was admitted to YCM Hospital but died on August 16.
Fifty-year-old Shivaji Sherke from Satara had fever for four days and turned critical on August 8 after which he was shifted to Sassoon Hospital. Thirty-year-old Alka Shinde from Ahmednagar had fever and cold for eight days before she was brought to Sassoon on August 15.
Finally 10,837 members of the medical community have taken the imported injectible vaccine. The government had provided 34,000 doses of the imported vaccine to be given free of cost to high-risk group of doctors and paramedical workers across Maharashtra. ?Health officials had a tough time in persuading them due to fear of side effects like Guille Barre Syndrome,? said Dr V M Kulkarni, state immunisation officer.

The PMC standing committee on Tuesday directed civic administration to consult the state government for making available swine flu vaccine at civic hospitals free of cost. ?We are of the opinion that vaccine should be made available free for poor in civic hospitals,? said Arvind Shinde, chairman of committee.He said the PMC has been asked to get state government approval.
