Taipei, March 4 (CNA) A total of 1,456 ducks were culled on a farm in Pingtung County on Saturday after it was found to be infected with avian flu, the county government said.

The highly pathogenic H5N8 avian influenza virus was detected on the farm, said Lee Yung-wen (李永文), head of the county's Animal Disease Control Center.

Since the start of the year, 69 poultry farms in Taiwan have been confirmed to be infected with various highly pathogenic avian flu strains, resulting in the culling of some 504,800 birds, according to the Council of Agriculture...

[TD]Samples from two poultry farms in Pingtung County and Kaohsiung City were sent to the National Laboratory, Animal Health Research Institute (AHRI) for analysis in response to the testing requirement before being put on the market. Highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N8 subtype was confirmed by AHRI. The farms have been placed under movement restriction. All animals on the infected farms have been culled. Thorough cleaning and disinfection have been conducted after stamping out operation. Surrounding poultry farms within 3 km radius of the infected farm are under intensified surveillance for three months.[/TD]
