The Ministry of Social Protection has called for the Regional Directorates of Health to continue the monitoring of respiratory diseases that often occur at this time of year.

It reaffirms the obligation to ensure compliance with treatment protocols by health care providers and to strengthen information campaigns and community education on prevention and warning signs.

According to the National Institute of Health , viruses are the main cause of these diseases in the country.

In 2010, respiratory syncytial virus caused 62% of the cases, followed by H1N1 influenza (18%), Parainfluenza (8%) seasonal influenza A (6%), Influenza B (3%) and adenovirus (3%) .

In 2011, of the 103 cases studied, 73% are in Bogota, including respiratory syncytial virus remains the leading cause (49%), followed by parainfluenza virus (22%), adenovirus (20%) and the virus Influenza A (10%).

The most affected are children under 5 years and the symptoms include fever, malaise, congestion, runny nose or conjunctivitis, which eventually evolve other symptoms such as cough, sputum and shortness of breath.
