Camps to screen swine flu cases

Theni (PTI) Jul 17 (PTI) The Public Health department is to set up screening camps on Tamil Nadu-Kerala border areas in the district in the wake of reports of swine flu cases in Vandiperiyar and Alapuzha areas in the neighbouring state. Deputy Director of Public Health Dr.Chelladurai told PTI today that the camps were being set up to screen people coming from Kerala since there were reports of swine flu in Vandiperiyar and Alapuzha areas. He said that normally during the rainy seasons, swine flu and Chikungunya cases were reported in parts of Kerala. Many of the swine flu victims in the border areas also come to Tamil Nadu for treatment, he said.

Man with swine flu hospitalised

Coimbatore, Sept 21 (PTI) A 49-year old man was today admitted to a private hospital here after testing positive for swine flu. Doctors attending on him today said the patient had been put on ventilator support and all preventive medicines given. The man, hailing from Erode, was admitted to a local hospital on Sept 17 and referred here after his swab tests proved positive for swine flue. This is the first swine flu case in the region after a gap of nearly one year.

First case of swine flu in TN this year

ERODE: In what is being seen as the first confirmed case of swine flu (H1N1 influenza) this season in Tamil Nadu, a patient from Erode patient is in a critical state at a private hospital here.
Elangovan, a resident of Manickampalayam village in Erode, was admitted to a private hospital in Erode on September 17, for fever. As antibiotics failed to work, he was referred to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, on Tuesday. ?We were ready to admit him on Tuesday, but his relatives opted to put him in a private hospital here,? said CMCH Resident Medical Officer P Sivaprakasam.
He was admitted to Sri Ramakrishna Hospital on Tuesday and the lab report found him positive of swine flu. ?He was in a critical condition when he was admitted here and swine flu was identified late. His condition is still critical. We have put him on ventillator,? duty doctors of Intensive Care Unit in Ramakrishna Hospital told Express on Thursday.
Deputy Director of Health Services S Senthil Kumar said this was the only case of swine flu in the district till now.

Probe for H1N1 after 34-year-old dies

THANJAVUR: The medical report and blood samples of a 34-year-old woman, who died on Sunday at the Government Medical College Hospital here was sent to the King?s Institute in Chennai for testing whether she was infected by H1N1 virus.

Although, previous tests in government approved laboratories had not shown any positive result for H1N1, the samples and the report was being sent to the King?s Institute to clear any doubts, said the deputy director of health, Singaravadivelan.

Nageshwari (34), wife of Thangamuthu and resident of M K Moopanar Road, near the Thanjavur Head Post Office, was admitted to a private hospital. After the patient showed signs of severe cold, breathing trouble, vomiting, and diarrhoea, she was referred to a private laboratory at Tiruchy for testing her blood and sputum. Later, Nageswari was shifted to the TMCH, he said.

The Health Department had sent her medical report with the samples of blood and sputum to Chennai to find out if she was affected by H1N1 virus.

Suspected swine flu patient at Salem GH

SALEM: A woman, down with fever for 20 days, was shifted from a private hospital to the Salem GH on Friday morning with indications of swine flu.

Put in a quarantined ward, she is under intensive treatment. Doctors from the General Medicine Department of the Salem GH conducted several tests on her.

The patient?s husband Raja, a daily wage worker from Maduknonepayalam in Dharmapuri District, said his wife, Sumathy (32), took ill 20 days back and was treated in a private hospital in Dharmapuri.

As fever did not subside, she was referred to a corporate hospital in Salem.

According to Raja, blood and sputum samples sent to Coimbatore indicated swine flu following which the lab in Coimabatore informed the Coimbatore GH who in-turn alerted the Salem GH authorities.Observing medical protocols in respect of infectious diseases, the private hospital discharged Sumathy and was admitted to the Salem GH. Dr Anbalagan, Chief of General Medicine Salem GH told reporters that the patient had symptoms that were more indicative of pneumonia. However blood and sputum samples have been sent to Coimbatore for further confirmation.

Hospital Superintendent Dr N Mohan could not be contacted for mor details.
